So Baba Ramdev wants to do amaran anshan or in English Fast Unto Death to end corruption in India. He wants to bring back all money stashed by Indians in swiss bank accounts and those with money in such banks should be hanged according to him.. Fuck man.. I though with the recent reverses in west bengal, we had seen the last of 'lal salaam' in India. Clearly, Communist funding in India has found a new outlet.. This man who has earned the following of mindless zombies impressed by his two bit breathing exercises is seeking to disrupt the normal functioning of democracy in India and essentially attempting to bring about a communist revolution..

Now I am the first one who is against corruption.. but his methods are nothing but disruptive. There are merits to his arguments, but you cant go about making laws which make those people vulnerable who have creative ways of making money through forex trading and overseas consultancy gigs. Such income can escape taxation in India legally. For example, If I sitting in New Delhi, consult on some foreign project anywhere in the world and am paid in Us dollars which I choose to keep in a foreign bank. This in principle is hard earned money which I choose to keep in a foreign bank to avoid paying taxes on it. This transaction is legal and no law in any country can make me pay taxes on it.

another example is fluctuations in prices of gold. I buy gold in Indian rupees, take it with me abroad and sell it in Us dollars and again keep the money in a swiss bank account. I cannot be compelled to pay taxes on the profit that i make on such a transaction unless of course I reside in china

the point here is that there is a fine line between bending the rules and illegal black money which for example comes from scams such as CWG scam, 2G scam and so forth. Yes there is a need for greater transparency and recovery of such funds. but that would come through generic evolution and on case by case basis. Not all Indians who have swiss bank accounts are traitors. I urge people who are into ramdev breathing and kundalini bullshit to use the things he preaches and think.. Does a rapidly growing economy with global business making multiple investments need political instability??

BTW babaji, where does all the chanda come from for your trust and all?? I hope you are paying some taxes on it..

I wasnt supposed to blog for a while.. but a recent comment by my mom over her phone where she was like "beta USA is no longer good for Indian students" actually forced my hand.. that and an obnoxious experiment that I have to baby sit..

So trivalley university.. lets see, this problem of diploma mills is an age old american problem. The easiest and legal route to immigrate to US is through F1 visa. in terms of requirement, the only thing you need is an I20 and proof of funds for your education and presto chango your green card wet dreams are fulfilled.. It has become easier these days to secure proof of funds. I recently read somewhere that per capita income in India has risen to Rs 50k which is quite bit much.. The problem remains obtaining an I20. As with any capitalist economy, demand creates supply and preto chango we have educational consultants in India like Jambooree, some random guy in malviya nagar (in delhi) who gurantees you admits for Rs 1 lakh (his game is you apply to five schools and you get atleast two options´) and scores of shady shops on upper floors of nehru place.. these fraudsters are not regulated and neither are their practices put on paper.

I was nearly duped by jamboreee at new delhi. I could see what they were doing.. Inflated CV, over exaggerated personal statements.. they bascially lie on students behalf, not tellin them of the consequences that happen when you lie.. but this isnt the worse thing they do.. Some of them also exact a commission from multiple such diploma mills.. they tell students that if they apply to atleast 5 schools of their choice, their admission is 'guranteed'. Now if 21 + year olds think that they cannot be held accountable for such a transaction then they are sadly mistaken. Their defence that they were granted valid visas does not protect them from culpability from this fraud. There are 300+ universities offering higher education in US. if you choose a place just cause its in california or there are 1000 students there from your state, then you are inviting trouble from the outset. selecting a school ranked top 100 in US news ( ranking available freely online ) gurantees that you are going into a valid program. As far as these students possessing valid US visas goes, when you put a dense sludge on a fine sieve, some particulate is bound to get through. And then these students also misunderstand what a visa is. Strictly speaking, a F1 visa is a letter requesting entry to US soil. Entry is given provided they havent falsified any information and will uphold the law of the land. A sovereign nation has all rights to protect its boundries and punish those who break the law of the land. who will be to blame if some of these students cross mexican border from texas or california for example?? Arent foreign nationals engaged in drug trade prosecuted in India?? Thos who become victims of violent crimes every year do their governments interefere in the functioning of the law of land in India?? the answer is a big NO

If anything, I think the US government has treated these kids with dignity and respect.. putting them in a detention center with hardened criminals would have put them in the way of far more eggregious harm than minor discomfort of wearning an electronic tracking device. Its upto the Government of India and Indian media to stop being a cry baby and probe how did 1500 students from AP ended up in a single University.. who is the front of this racket here in India?? Its high time, we look at our own mess which gets dumped elsewhere

today we talk about shining India.. India, the land of burgeoning economy, the place where the dreams of the middle class man is quashed every day amongst the rising prices of onions and petrol and dropping prices of beer. Where not so long ago, an aloo parantha was sold for Rs 20 and is now sold for as high as Rs 200. Where a kid growing up really has two options; become a doctor or an IT engineer and help run this great sham of democracy.. (in reality it is a plutocracy but more on that later).. Every year some lame ass minister takes up podiums across IITs, TIFRs and IIScs of this great country and stresses the need of advancing science education in this country.. that we need more scientists and scientists should be encouraged.. today In this piece, I bring to light, the shoddy state of affairs of science education in India.. India whose talented scientists are winning Nobel Prizes, starting cutting edge start up companies and driving global economies, in that very great India, the superpower to recon with in 2020 has so many unemployed scientists that their skills are for sale for less than $400 a month.. thats right ladies and gentlemen, $400 a month.. for that much money you can hire a person with double masters in science and engineering or 5 published journal articles with more than 10 citations, a paltry sum, less than what is paid to entry level software programmers in india(>Rs 25000 per month), or jobless people in america (>$2000 per month) or lab interns at any shady university on this planet, our very own Delhi Technological University (DTU) announced hiring of exceptional talent for $400 per month on CONTRACTS for a year with no promise of continued employment and they have found talented scientists and engineers to fill these ridiculous job offers.. My feelings on this are ambivalent, whether to congratulate my alma mater or to cry on the state of affairs of science and education in my country

I was quite amused.. Here I am sitting in sweden, not a PhD yet (and there are scores like me) being paid $2000 a month by goverment of sweden (they pay twice this much to their regular students) to do research here and there is quite joke of an ad, trying to hire highly qualified people (freshly minted PhDs no less) for paltry sum of $400 a month?? .. this has to be a joke right I thought.. something is wrong here.. This college of mine was rechristened as an autonomous university for achieving excellence in research and development, a college creating fake quotas, organizing bull-shit seminars, crap-o-fests with rent a hour bhands, speakers with next to little pedigree (the present VC included), would surely step up in the arena of what is supposed to be their forte.. for the very purpose they were formed.. to establish a world class institution imparting quality science and technology education in india.. but no.. in this country of scam a day running into crores, this minor anomaly (scientists for sale at a price you could not even get a decent, disease free escort for an hour anywhere on this planet) is going unreported, undetected and infact celebrated on the front pages of a reputed scientific university.. I for once cannot let this travesty go unnoticed..

deciphering meluhans : Who gets to decide what is good and what is evil

a very happy new year to whosoever reads the ramblings of this self-professed analyst.. Its been four years writing this blog.. The past four years of my life have been extremely eventful and this blog and its readers, ever dependable companions.. The primary purpose of starting this blog was to write down and channelize my thoughts on topics of relevance. I am no God and yet reflecting on whatever I have written thus far in this blog, I sense a bias.. What good is an analysis if there is a presumed bias.. who am I to decide what is right and what is wrong? why should I castigate someone or something if all they do differ from me in their opinion?? If i dont like like the acting of bhai himesh then maybe I should shut up or if I like a movie why should I praise it?? or if I dont like the events of the past 18 months at my alma mater then I should not vocalize my feelings on a public forum.. I was forced to ponder over these existential questions while reading thie noval called 'Immortals of Meluha' by amish an IIM grad turned writer. The work is a modern take on civilization of the Indus valleys written under the assumption that Indus valley civilization was set up by lord ram and lord shiv was a human of flesh and blood; this work being part one of a trilogy detailing his efforts to save this brilliant civilization.

It is now clear to me that there is no right or wrong. Every human being, by definition has the right to have an opinion and by corollary should have the freedom to express dissent in any form they choose as long as it does not the life and liberty of public at large.. This is the ideal scenario. In this day and age however, there is an omni potent and omnipresent mahadev whose darkest con has been to make itself inconspicuous. allow me to unmask the kalyugi mahadev by using the recent DCE/DTU controversy I blogged extensively about in the last 8 months. This got very personal for me for two reasons. a) I am an alumnus and b) I am an intellectual and my job is to question things. So I blogged and blogged away. I raised some meaningful arguments which was dismissed as double speak and heresey kind of what suryavanshishs did to chandravanshishs in this novel. It is easy to dismiss things as heresay.. people rarely have concrete proofs. I mean comeone, will I ever find a journal entry in Dr P.B. Sharma's personal diary which says "I converted DCE to DTU so that I could get five more years of salary and retirement benefits as the VC of a deemed university" ?? I wish I or any one else was that lucky. While what I and a lot of students parents and alumni chose to say about this conversion can be dismissed as heresay, what CBI has to say about talwars in the arushi talwar murder case is portrayed as solid proof in Indian Media. It is a disturbing trend I have been noticing for the past five years. We dont see the facts being reported. We see the news that we are meant to see, that helps certain quarters while undermining the interests of others. The nira radia expose is a prime example of such misuse of power by the Indian media exercised by selling their ethics to the highest bidder driven by ideological or financial gains. Therefore, in this day and age, the Mahadev or the God of Gods is the Indian Media. The people lap up what they report as the absolute truth and the rest is heresay.. I mean come on.. If they can find the sex tapes of a swami and an actress, I am pretty sure they can find incriminating evidence against errant army generals, IIT professors (one of whom coincidently happens to be on the board of DCE/DTU), bank executives and CWG organizers. but then again, where is the fun or to put in their own/my language, 'TRPs/somras' in that??

In the immortals of meluha, the word of neelkanth is said to be absolute, he is the destroyer of all evil and harbinger of all things good. good or evil, in this day and age, the word of Indian media is absolute. In this kalyug, there is no asura and no deva there is only Indian media..

(Side note : Noticeable achievements of Dr Sharma since 2004 are an autonomous vehicle that still cannot fly autonomously because the students choose to use the evolution boards instead of designing the whole thing from scratch, a bunch of other toys, schematics of which can be found online, a bunch of fake quotas which can be misused for monetary gains by a mere ration card, hiring sub par faculty, starting redundant courses which puts unsuspecting students in a position where they cannot find jobs in their areas of core competency ( his MOUs with third rate IT companies look good for inflated placement rates), starting an MBA program for 60 odd students with three full time faculty members, sitting idle when students were lathi charged(a shameful first in the history of this college), sitting idle when students were being beaten up inside the campus, running an entrepreneurship symposium with a third rate TV bhand at the center of attraction (possibly the first such exposition in the world TBH soon) and so forth. But then again, his doings are far less severe than those of his more powerful contemporaries and hence unworthy of the attention of Indian media. I hope mahadev reads this one day or abandons his thirst of somras (TRPs))

ah well..

peace needs to return to this blogspot.. atleast till I get back to USA.. To the readers who follow me, the update is that I am in goteborg sweden.. I am here on a scholarship from government of Sweden and goal of the project at chalmers university of technology is to study the dynamics of VCSELs(sorry thats about what I can write here).. VCSELs are extremely small lasers which provide the advantage of photonic integration, low per unit production cost and easy of testing due to light coming out vertically from them.. Their applications range from local access communication networks to Photonic Intergrated Circuits and gas and pressure Sensors. As I venture from the world of Fiber optics to the world of semiconductors, this experience is very crucial for me to understand this new emerging class of semiconductor devices.

enough of the boring work details.. lets talk about Sweden.. Sweden is a beautiful country.. Not just the locales and the architecture and the paved streets but most people I have met with have beautiful hearts.. Be it my swedish advisor who came to pick me up at the airport, to my group members who are extremely supportive and forthcoming with help and guidance to small community of Indian Students here who are more warm and welcoming than anyone I have met at rochester NY... Its true as the number of Indians increase beyond a critical number, they tend to form clusters and become cold and distant!! you see this everywhere in America but not so in Sweden..

My dear friend

I could probably write another long post, especially since I am on a break today due to downtime at my lab but I see that will not solve anything.. the point is we are two different sides of the same coin

You feel proud about a TOY SHERA whereas I see it as a minor achievement being extolled beyond reason. That toy incorporates well known tech involving motion sensors, possibly pressure sensors, actuators, sound and LED circuits which are available off the shelf.. A real innovation would have been something which moves and has 3-D freedom of motion. And yes, those students made it but soo much hooplah about something so minor is actually the fundamental flaw we face as a nation. this is exactly why I got involved in DTU debate. It is actually a nothing, a void made to look like something big that an act needs to brought up in the parliament to enact it..

like i said before, I raised my point, I was abused, then I abused then you abused then I abused and finally this cycle seems to be ending.. so I dont need a new post anymore.. this matter is under judicial review and I am sure judiciary will do the right thing (whatever it is). That is the last bastion against corruption that still stands in our country..

People like pranav mistry, Ashutosh Saxena have had the answers since they were kids.. they have been repeatedly dismissed by grey haired individuals like hon VC ( and head honchos at CSIR http://www.nature.com/news/2009/091109/full/462152a.html) who have the notion that wisdom is a monotonically increasing function of age. People like mistry and saxena have been leaving india since 1950 and will continue to do so. India as a nation has been extolling mediocrity since 1948 and will continue to do so. Oh look we tried and tried hard.. women are being raped in delhi, kids are being targeted by pedophiles, farmers are committing suicide, sex ratios are going haywire, female infanticide is on the rise, we are diluting the brand value of our premier education institutions such as IITs and DCE and then we spend close to 1000 crore on CWG out of which more than half is unaccounted for and we as a nation are supposed to feel proud of it?? or for DTU or for the multiple IITs we know have?? really dude?? I cannot feel proud and never will period!!

I am not even a fraction of their pedigree.. I am more of an executer than a thinker.. to improve my thinking faculties is the very reason I started my PhD.. I am getting there.. trust me.. Its my life goal and I plan to achieve it

These are exactly those universities which consultants in INDIA use to get fake I20s for kids. Kids going to these schools end up in gas stations or driving cabs and get shot.. depressing but true. I would acknowledge such an effort if virginia tech, virginia commonwealth universoity, arizona state university, university of florida gainsville, florida state university at Tallahassee, university of arizona, boston university, SUNY Albany, SUNY stony brook, university of delaware etc come to the campus.. these arent the top ten.. these are the univs average to bright kids go to here in America. These are the universities which acknowledge IITs through their alumni network.. bring them to DTU campus and let their admission Councillors counsel the students.. At that point, I will gladly retire..

this is whr you keep on contradicting your own self.. you say you are ex-DCE but at the same time you say that DTU was established in 2010.. DCE has been around since 1942 and your pioneer visionary has been around since 1990. All I say is has DCe achieved even 25% of what cornell has??

whose fault is it I ask?? When Prof Sinha joined in 1997 or many others for that matter, if they were given some sort of start-up capital, they would have achieved a lot more.. The system has failed this great institution.. This institution who has generated alumini who went on to partner philip johnson ( the father of modern architecture!! ) and even now this system which is called DTU will fail this great institution as it is not correcting the ills of the past..

Toy Cars: Thank you for appreciating the honest efforts of the students, isn't it good enough that amongst the rankings you posted on your blog, DTU is the only Asian University mentioned? At least we are doing things, and we must laud the efforts, rather than calling them toy cars.

Here too, I have been misquoted.. I have never cast an aspersion on the efforts of students who build these cars. Its a very noble effort but what is the intention behind this effort?? if we go back in the history, the concept of making cars was pioneered by the defianz racing team.. students picked up on the idea of the glamor and press coverage associated with this as well as being on the good books of the then principal and the now Hon. VC and then every year, the students who couldnt make it to one team start their own.. this is clearly a bad precedent the moral responsibility of which I put squarely on Hon. VC Sh. P. B . Sharma.. these students might do well at these universities but the fundamental spirit behind learning and innovation is not being fostered in them for which the above mentioned person is responsible... I ask of these students at DCE/DTU to make a project which doesnt take them to a competition. Lets say a robotic arm which is capable of autonomously opening the lid of a jar. Now that is a real project.. Its still a matter of research for various applications.. there are no student competitions for it.. you dont get the circuit of the flight controller when you google how to build an unmanned aerial vehicle and you dont get any prize for making it work.. just the pure satisfaction of learning.. the students who make this are the students which WILL SURELY do REALLY WELL at MIT/HARVARD etc and can pretty much better a PRASHANT BAVEJA without breaking a sweat!! thats how much I believe in students of DCE provided their hearts are in the right place.. right now they are not!!! another side question// these students who made this shera for political mileage with delhi CM.. what if they were instead encourage to make this arm an automated assembly line for some sort.. from what i understand they are startup and need some sort of start up capital or project.. surely something like this would give them that opportunity!! alas they are wasted in making a toy....

A short Note on biodiesel

Innovation is a change in the thought process for doing something, or the useful application of new inventions or discoveries

so an innovation is not necessarily a new discovery.. It could also be a new application of existing state of the art.. while you say this

Sadly, the project is led by some very incompetent people like NK, but then it is an important research on its own in the context of India. I also understand that not much has been done to take the project forward, but this responsibility should/must lie with the lead researcher, not PBS. He provided all he could to take the project forward.

I say this.. Hon Vc has been taking credit for this project since the very begining. he drive the so called biodiesel car in the campus. flaunts it as a green initiative and then when things come on the chopping block, he puts the blame back on the researchers?? come on.. biodiesel being produced on campus in my mind is still a BRILLIANT idea.. An INNOVATIVE policy of Campus Carbon Credits could be implemented wherein students who park their car on campus given a 10% tuition credit if their car is diesel and they buy atleast 100 liters of locally produced biodiesel at Rs 50 per liter per year.. they can be charged for it upfront and given a credit card for swiping at a local refilling station.. those who continue to use petrol can be charged 10% Environmental Surcharge and same can be extended to faculty as well.. an enhancement in pay vs a reduction in pay model which is workable with MUTUAL discussion and not Autocratically as he usually goes about doing his business.. I think biodiesel is a wonderful idea but being deserted as a adopted child now that more colorful projects are being proposed.. I have seen him wear his tardy blue suit every time a project is announced.. he smiles in front of camera.. makes big speeches with hollow promises.. does he care to follow up?? if he takes credit in front of the media then blame is on him.. how can you say he has done all that he can wherein with his 40+ years of experience this simple idea is something he couldn't come up with.. he says his focus is on world class infrastructure.. when you kids were in your jammies we used to have this wifi network which was built from the hostel funds. the purpose of that network was to provide wifi access to hostels.. of course the people who were awarded the contract for wifi had to give serious kick backs and then their payments were never made, they backed out of maintaining the network and when he went to bhopal the acting principal had the entire wifi network dismantled.. even the basic community colleges which were set up less than 10 years ago have wifi.. now what do u have to say?? every year students pay upward of thousand rupees as internet charges and still there is no wifi internet on campus?? surely this takes less than a year to set up..

lets examine a true world class insitution or the vision of DCE as I see it which is very achievable weather it is DCE or DTU if the person at helm does his job properly weather he is a principal or a VC

A library and a computer center open 24 hours, an all night cafeteria which is accessible to both male and female students.. buses running from TYPE V and SNH which ferry female students to library and computer center where they too like their male counterparts and contribute to the innovations at DCE.. these buses can be powered by biodiesel made by using the recycled frying oil generated at the local cafeteria thereby reducing the carbon footprint of the campus..

Hostel Timings: Somehow the timing of Girl's Hostel makes it in the demands list....Interestingly enough! But this has also been done, with more relaxations in the timings for Girls Hostel and extended hours for the Computer Center and Library. There is ample time and places for ... well...leave it.

the maggots say this to enhancing the timings of the girls hostel that it is only demanded so that male and female students can have sex on campus.. while i dont see any problem with that as long as the sex is consensual (of course the maggots could have turned gay by licking the balls of their ringleader but thats besides the point) do you realize the psychological impact of being caged inside their quarters for close to 12 hours a day?? no wonder the only suicide in DCE in my recent memory happened to be that of a female student...she was suffering from personal problems and the oppressive hostel atmosphere obviously did not help her cause..

continued with a vision.. every new research faculty being hired should be paid upto 50 lakh rupees based on their qualification and their achievements and should be hired on probation for three years if their experience is less than 10 years.. the money they are given, they should be given freedom to start a lab in their area of expertise and also bring in money from government and private grants.. a small percentage of this money lets say 30 should be given back to the university as a overhead so that the university coffers do not run dry and soon it becomes self sustainable.. the university should have an IP cell where all the intellectual property being generated by the university is patented and those patents are licensed to the industry for product development.. this IP office can also interface with a WELL planned technology incubator housing innovators and technology entrepreneurs who can convert this technology into viable products...

this is my vision.. so far what has PB sharma achieved?? he backs toy cars which i still maintain are difficult projects but they ARE NOT innovations.. he can go to the media and claim our students beat MIT cornell harvard and what not and look my vision is working please take a look at what MIT and harvard and cornell achieve routinely..

1990: PBS joins DCE as Principal @ Kashmiri Gate. The college is running 3 Academic Calendars behind, ruled by Bihari and Pahadi groups and on the verge of collapse.

1990-1995: Academic calendars restored, CEE introduced and New Campus started. DCE shifts partially to the new campus (and for the first time, features in the top 20!)

1995-1999: Great development work takes place in the new campus. The infrastructure is more than what is required at that moment. DCE is shining and going up up up in rankings.

1999-2003: PBS moves to Bhopal, NO INFRASTRUCTURE DEVELOPMENT happens in this period. Due to the lack of progress, Govt reduces the budget too.

2003-2005: PBS returns, things pick up. Library, T&P, Computer Center finish...excellent progress on stalled development...inspite of great budgetary reductions.

2005-2008: PBS in Bhopal again, the great "Goldar Era"!! It's the same scene, no development work...no progress.

2008-till date: PBS come back and starts moving things again. The step to DTU ensures that there remains firm commitment from Govt towards this great institute.

Now in the last 20 years PBS has been here, he has really been here for 13 Years. In 13 years, moving from Kashmiri Gate to the present campus, having what we have today....working in the constraints of a typical Indian Government System....IS NO MEAN ACHIEVEMENT!!!

PB sharma never give one single rupee to SPIE DCE chapter as long as I was there.. I started SPIE DCE chapter for when I started working with Prof. R.K. Sinha, I knew that even If i or any other undergraduate gets a conference paper, we wont get funding to present it.. A year later, I got my paper and SPIE dce chapter gave me the money I presented my paper came back applied to colleges got through rochester..PB sharma has therefore NO ROLE WHATSOEVER in anything I have achieved.. In fact in no meaningful achievement on campus PB sharma has any role.. he just likes to take credit..

The validity of HIS flagship project, the biodiesel is known by many!!Ever since then each year atleast one student(chapter member) gets money from SPIE to go to conferences and also atleast one student associated with an SPIE chapter each year has gotten into reputed masters and PhD program. this is NOT PB sharmas achievement.. this is mine and my advisors Dr. RK sinhas who WAS NOT hired by PB sharma!! so please you know ur history.. 1.) conversion from DCE to DTU has achieved nothing.. If anything we have lost the backing of DU which has put us in a tight corner (refer to my previous posts about DU)

Innovation/Incubator/Entrepreneurship: These are initiatives, that can only bear fruits over a period of time. But aren't you happy that something has finally been put in place? That there now exists a possibility of something happening, somewhat supported by a system. You talk about real companies coming out of this initiative (and you think it can happen right away!), how many such have come out of Indian Institutes anyways? Can you present some statistics from IIT's or other Top 10 Institutes? It does not happen overnight and it did not happen overnight in your adapted home, America.

this is perhaps the biggest bone of contention between me and the operators. their claim that universities look at some random stupid rankings appearing in some indian newspaper or magazine is the biggest piece of bullshit i ever heard. i doubt any of the maggots running this blogspot actually have any experience with US or any other foriegn admissions committee.. let me put some other credentials of mine on the table.. aside from working on my own admission packets, I used to be an active member of this forum www.edulix .com for over three years where i have helped thousands of aspirants from all across india answering their queries about admissions and profile evaluations.. so based on my experience (which we dont know if these maggots have any cause they have no name :( so sad.. ) I can tell you how admission committees work.

when you send you application packet abroad lets take the example of US, these days, most of things are done on the computer but most universities still only accept (or used to two years ago ) paper transcripts. these transcripts along with other materials you submit online go to the department to which you apply to for a particular program. for each position in a deptt, an excellent university gets more than 10 times the applicants. so the first round of screening is usually done by a graduate programs coordinators. so profiles which dont make the cut, their packets are never presented to the faculty for discussion.. usually only 25% of the total applicants make the cut here.. and this is where converting DCE to DTU brings maximum harm. also like i have said before, most top universities dont endorse these student projects as research.. they just provide them with faculty and lab support and they do what they have to do.. so while dce is happy beating cornell at toy car competitions, look at what cornell is achieving..

A word of note here, I in no way undermine the efforts of students going into these projects.. this is all very good.. i congratulate you on your efforts but i also implore you to set bigger goals.. there is no limit to what you can achieve.. open your minds.. making toy cars while impressive is not real research.. figure out a problem, solve it, write it up publish it.. it will give you a heightened satisfaction.. if its engineering solutions that you wish to pursue, pursue something that is of use to you to the humanity.. for example, you know of the high flourine content in the DCE waters.. design a low cost reverse osmosis filter.. your bones will be better for it.. or set up an intra campus network so you can make phone calls within a campus for free .. (this will also eliminate the need to put jammers as shree PbS can monitor your convo from his office (see maggots i am not the biggest schmuck around..) or make satellites that can be launched into orbits and give real time data for scientific research... then u dont need this multi lakh rupees for your visa fees and plane tickets to go to US. this is tax payer money, money that your parents pay to the indian government.. money that should be used for R&D purposes.. if you have so much drive to mount on this big a project do it without expectation of any sponsorship from the college.. do it for yourself..

so while the comparison to cornell is over, lets go to some other aspects of whats maggots said..

13) No regular faculty in the School of Management of DTU.
Facts: (i) Nothing could be far from truth then a misguide such as this assertation. The fact is that three regular faculty members all possessing PhD degrees in Management have been appointed in the School of Management of DTU in addition to Prof. S.K. Garg himself a Ph.D in Industrial Management and two other adjunct regular faculty from Mechanical and Humanities Department.

12) Not applying for approval of AICTE for the new courses introduced in DTU.
Facts: (i) DTU being a Technological University established by Govt. of Delhi does not require approval of AICTE for its UG / PG programs. The AICTE covers affiliated institutions which the DCE was.

this one is the most interesting one.. AICTE approval is not required.. lets see.. the student faculty ratio at present (this is very approximate so bear with me) is 20 : 1.. which for the benefit of brainless maggots means 20 students for each faculty..

aicte stipulates the following

he desirable student to teacher ratio for engineering degree program for the model curriculum will be 10:1. However, it should not be allowed to rise beyond 15:1.

so while it is not required, there is no way in hell AICTE would give recognition to courses at DTU.. period!!

(ii) In all 49 new regular faculty members have been recruited by DTU and they have joined academic departments in June / July this year. Thus, reducing the shortage of regular faculty considerably. The new faculty has joined in Departments of Applied Physics / Engineering Physics (08), Applied Chemistry (05), Polymer Science and Chemical Technology (02), Electrical and Electronics Engineering (04), Electronics and Communication (05), Computer Engineering and Software Engineering (03), Information Technology (06), Bio-Technology (03), Mechanical and Production Engineering / Automobile Engineering (06), Civil and Environmental Engineering (03), Training and Placement (01) and Delhi School of Management (03). interesting argument.. if you see the list provided on the webpage..the number of faculties holding a phd is roughly 50%.. again, I am not anti non phd faculty but then again those who are these PhD holders, how many of them have a publication record better or even comparable than the best researcher currently in DCE?? how many experimentalists?? how many theoreticians?? was any startup funding given??

14) Lengthy procedure for getting anything done.
Students are advised to forward their applications through their respective Heads of the Departments to avoid any delay in processing their applications. In any case specific cases, if any, can be redressed through the Student Grievance Committee headed by the Dean (Student Welfare).

The powers to be behind this are way stronger than you can conceptualize. Making DCE a university was never a knee jerk reaction. It has been in planning for many years. Many times DCE was 'overlooked' for IIT status one begins to think whether there was ever an effort to make it one.

I wish all of you guys and gals involved to promote tis cause the best but please be on guard. As it is PB can be problematic, a desperate PB is a dangerous PB. So far you guys have done great. only 77 people made it for mid sems. try and get this number down to zero by march 19th and you will have achieved a lot

My heart goes out to for the protesters who got hurt today. I feel sorry for those who did not attend today in fear of persecution or to watch IPL. Trust me when I say, cause I know the man, PBS is the most vindictive person you will meet and he will avenge himself bit by bit if he is left with any power or authority our your futures. protracted battle or laying a firm demand of diluting his powers by

New Delhi, Sep 21 (PTI) The Delhi High Court today sought response from Centre and the city government on a petition challenging the conversion of Delhi College of Engineering (DCE) into Delhi Technical University (DTU). A Division Bench of Chief Justice Dipak Misra and Justice Manmohan also issued a notice to Delhi University besides the Central and Delhi governments and sought their response by December 8 on a petition filed by a group of students.

Filing the petition, the students pleaded to the court to declare the DTU Act, under which the DCE, earlier under DU, was converted into a state university, as ultra vires. They also pleaded to the court to quash the notification issued by LG in this regard in July last year.

We do not threaten anyone and we also openly said that we did not mean to target you. You seem to be pretty disturbed Prashant, which made us wonder whether to react to your posts or not. But you asked for it, so here we are..

First your most recent post, and then we come to you.
DU Semester System: So, how exactly do you propose this should have been done? Perhaps you are suggesting that there should have been Remuneration adjustments first, and then implementation of semester system? The point was not whether semester system implementation at DU is correct or not, the point is the way DUTA reacted to the entire episode....the trend that is being spotted in Universities across India. Shouting slogans, Abusing/Manhandling of a reputed person in public, taking out शवयात्रा for a person...is this the way of the educated? If there is some political organization exhibiting such behavior, it is understandable (not acceptable still), but the individuals involved here are highly qualified faculty members. Do you support this?

I do not support or condone anything.. India unfortunately happens to be the land of extremes. The situations that can be resolved by dialog are instead solved by media. So while a Mr paintal goes ahead and announces to the media that semester system will be imposed without resolving it with the teachers first, the teachers take it to the streets. sorry state oif affairs of my homeland, which is why I choose to leave, never to come back....

And furthermore, the pay scale of DU teachers already exceeds the scale of a number of State/National Universities operating the semester system.

There is no basis or truth to this, no such action has been proposed or planned by the University. Why do you take everything said by Facebookers as absolute truth? Come on, you are a great guy, with exceptional achievements, outstanding academic qualifications, a rising star in the academia, almost a candidate for the next Nobel Prize, yadda yadda yadda ....use a little reason. If you say every individual has the right to privacy, then every Institute has the right to security. Have you already forgotten the tragic fight that happened in recent past, should that not prompt the University authorities to take some steps? If they do it, you scream...if they don't you scream still! The OMV card is being implemented precisely to restrict the entry of external elements inside the campus, and put more accountability on Teachers to respect their time schedule, and this is surely causing some flutter and worry.

if it is just a matter of security then perhaps giving id cards with swipe access should be enough.. or better vigilance by the security personnel at the entry points.. I dont care if the walls have to be barricaded by electrified barbed wire but in my head rights of an individual far exceed the rights of a collective or an institution.. In any world class university as is so eloquently put about DTU, teachers and students are given the freedom to do what they please with their time and accountability is examined through their performance. If a teacher expects to go home during his off time then he is allowed to do so in most places of this planet, without him to have punch in his timmings..

Innovation/Incubator/Entrepreneurship: These are initiatives, that can only bear fruits over a period of time. But aren't you happy that something has finally been put in place? That there now exists a possibility of something happening, somewhat supported by a system. You talk about real companies coming out of this initiative (and you think it can happen right away!), how many such have come out of Indian Institutes anyways? Can you present some statistics from IIT's or other Top 10 Institutes? It does not happen overnight and it did not happen overnight in your adapted home, America.

granted it did not happen overnight in my adapted country, a good intent was there to begin with. everywhere in US whereever there are tech incubation centers, entrepreneurs in residence are hired, annual business plan competitions are held and winners are provided with stage zero capital, students are taught entrepreneurial accounting, how to accure capital, how to approach Venture Capitalists .. i dont see any of those.. and unless those are in place, it is just a waste of time and effort and tax payers money..

Finally, If we were in any way directly connected to PBS, you would not have to wait for some kind of communication with your Supervisors/University officials. This would have already happened. Baseless Allegations that you leveled against PBS. The objective was not to instigate students?

baseless?? you call them baseless?? students were beaten up in my campus.. yes that disturbed me..it should disturb any and everyone that has ever been a part of that campus.. it was the responsibility of the VC, warden, security officer and all of those officials to keep students safe..the lathi charge incident, even if sh PBS doesnt order it, he does nothing to actually protect the students..granted they were protesting against him but they are still his students.. now that we have the facts in order, lets step by step deconstruct my motivations against DTU, what I am trying to say, and what motivates me to say so.. That is why the name of this post is lets call a spade a spade

1.) My academic credibility. SO first of all I am told I cannot even achieve the shoelace of what Prof. P.B. Sharma has achieved. Lets have a look at my shoelaces so as to speak.. I passed my undergrad from Delhi College of Engineering with 77% marks in aggregate (To the academic underachievers running that blogspot, that is first class with distinction). Based on my academic record I got into direct track PhD program at The Institute of Optics, University of Rochester where I completed my masters in optics with a GPA of 3.5/4.0 and have since been a part of Nonlinear Fiber Optics Group. I have Published 3 papers in Top Ten Journals of my area and 4 th is in the peer review process. They are all first author papers and my list of publications can be accessed here . I have given three contributed talks at well respected conferences in my area. On the academic extra-curricular front, I have received two separate travel grants from SPIE, 2006 SPIE student scholarship for outstanding future contribution to Optics and Photonics and 2010 guest scholarship from Swedish Institute for conducting doctoral studies in Sweden. And that is just the jist of it. I am currently 25 going on 26 and I will finish my Doctoral studies sometime next year. So as far as comparing shoelaces go, as they say here in america "Bring it on Bitches". I hope this explains who I am. I really dont need to go to my advisor to know who PBS is and I certainly need the owner of that blog to grow a pair and tell it to the world who they are and lets have their academic achievements on the table. For If I am B grade product of DCE, I would wanna know all the A grade over achieving SOBs behind that blog..

2.) I licked PBS shoelaces and I am a thankless bastard : Since we are calling a spade a spade here lets try to ascertain whose shoelaces I actually licked or whether I licked any shoelaces at all. I used to be a student researcher at Prof R.K. Sinhas lab at DCE and Prof P.B. Sharma was a patron of Prof. R. K. Sinha. Prof. R.K. Sinha as we all know is a leading researcher in our college and I was his student and Prof P.B. sharma had to patronize him to get into news papers that DCE is a world class hub of scientific research. So I never really licked his shoelaces in principle and I hope Prof Sinha will attest to that fact. So I have nothing to thank him for directly.. Whatever I have achieved in my life is because of the support I had with Prof. R.K. sinha and a host of other people such as Prof N.K Bhagat, Prof. Pragati Kumar, Mrs Rajeshwari Pandey and Prof Narendra Nath. At DCE Prof. R.K. Sinha gave me full access to the labs at DCE where I learnt the tricks of my trade. I am also thankful to him for buying all those expensive hard bound editions at the DCE library one of which was written by my current advisor and has given a direction to my life. I am also thankful to the Deptt of Applied Physics for being a second home to me when I was in DCE. So I am not a thankless bastard as is so eloquently put. Its just that I have different set of people to thank to

3.) My personal Credibility

I have no introduction. I am a nobody. I am amongst many young people today who still have to leave India in the quest of their intellectual pursuits. I am also an alumnus of Delhi college of engineering. The recent announcement that has been made to convert DCE to Delhi Technological University (DTU). To be very honest, this decision has come as a shock to me. It is clearly a cheap attempt by the person currently at the helm of the affairs to elongate his tenure and also make a boat load of money by offering a boatload of private college recognition under the aegis of DTU. What he does not understand that " Golden egg laying goose is not slaughtered for immediate returns" and yet this is what precisely he is doing. Delhi College of Engineering has a name and a brand in US. In top PhD/masters/MBA programs in US dominated by IITians, if you are likely to find a non IITian, he/she will be a DCEite. This reality will change very quickly once this change is implemented and we will be left defending our degrees.

Respected mam, I dont know If you will ever end up reading this mail. It is not even important. The more important thing is that our precious DCE be saved from this unending abyss.

This was wayy before there was a formal student or faculty protest. I wrote this email independently and my opinions are independent of any influence by anybody. There are other movements out their by alumini which are garnering support and petition requests against DTU. Whatever reasons they have I couldnt care less. Neither I am aligned with the facebook movement. I am sympathetic to the cause of those who care to speak against DTU. The reason why I am against DTU are explained in the next point

4.) The reasons and rationale behind me being anti-DTU

a.) his blueprint of converting DCE to DTU was around even when I was there. However the motivation behind it was misplaced. Autonomy was always the motivation of the DCEites. But not at this price. For example there are 6 student teams involved in various projects and certain good amount of money is now being disbursed to them. What is the basis of this disbursement? are their performances reviewed? why the fake articles in news papers that teams won the competition whereas the best they do is win some best effort award. Do these kids actually build the circuits that go into these projects or 'assemble' them using evaluation boards?? who answers these questions?? when DCE was around there was some accountability.. now there is none..

b.) what about the famed bio-diesel project?? has even a single drop ever been produced?? the research here in US and europe on biodiesel has shifted from agricultural base to recycling frying oil for producing bio-diesel to make it a carbon neutral fuel. has our principal ever bothered to make those critical adjustments.. Biodiesel is no longer a subject of research in the west.. high school kids make it in their home here?? what is that humongous infrastructure in DCE attempting to do??

c.) The arbitrary manner in which faculty will now be recruited.. do you think it will improve DCE?? Hell no.. People from IITs with sub par masters academic record or below par publication track at PhD level will be hired as faculty and in fact are being hired.That is my beef.. this is not what DTU needs. increase the seats then hire sub par faculty to show DTU works whereas it is rotting internally

d.) I would have been okay with this change had a student referendum been held and all stakeholders, such as students, parents and alumini been involved, and online poll taken and then the decision were to be taken democratically. but rather it was taken arbitrarily. And arbitrarily how?? well known academicians of indian origin within and outside india were sent the blue-print of DTU and their comments sought. A few of those acadmicians happen to run in the same community as I belong to. They asked me, why is this guy trying to put DCE (ur school) against IIT to which I told them well he is a megalomaniac with an extreme messiah complex. Since DCE cant be converted into IIT he wants to position a new brand (brand DTU ) against IIT. A solid marketing plan, however with one fatal flaw (see the next comment)

e.)The motivation behind converting DCE to DTU was to introduce new courses and hire new faculty at a rapid rate. However reading behind those lines, one needs to ask the following questions---> are these courses even needed?? who needs geophysics in India?? or Engineering Physics when there are 100 s of IIT grads thronging the markets in these areas. Whats needed are expert telecommunications engineers, electronic materials and device engineers, Engineers specializing in renewable energy, A specialized program in energy policy wont hurt either, how about engineering ethics?? or scientific ethics (courses introduced in these directions would be positive). This misguided zeal of positioning brand DTU against brand IIT jeopardizes the future of 1000s of DTU students when they come out in the job market in 2013. They pay 50k and with their degrees from unknown DTU they are expected to compete against the strong alumini network of IITs. Do you seriously believe that all alumini back the DTU change?? Putting so many lives and futures at jeopardy in itself is an act of moral corruption in my eyes and In fact the reason why I am so outspoken. PBS has effectively drowned all these voices of dissent saying that these are all people with agenda against me. But sir please, I invite you in person to answer these questions.. You say you arent corrupt but placing the lives of 100s of student at stake without them even knowing, Isnt it an act of moral corruption?? as you lick the hoes of Sh vinod dham and take personal phone calls from Sh Raj soin, you have a moral obligation to answer these comments as well. And this is not like the time when parents ambushed you. I am putting my comments online on the world wide web under my name with my credibility on the line. So stop saying that I have an agenda or hiding behind some brain washed 20 year olds.., lets have a constructive debate one academic to another. And of course you have the choice to say that I am not worthy enough to answer to but well refer to my first comment.. time and history will tell who Is worth and who is not.

5.) facts vs fiction vs counter facts---->

MYTH: No permission from the DU to convert a Central Govt Institute into a State University.
FACT: DCE was always a State Govt Institute "affiliated" to DU. There is no permission required by law to seek consent of a affiliating University.
This is true.. NO permission from DU was required. But what about other stakeholders. Alumini, parents, children. Surely if the plan to form DTU was around for such a long time, a all party consensus or a referendum or debate could have been done before a change was put into effect. why this pomp and show of involving parents as an after effect when all you want is to tell them that whats done is done. control your kids or else..

MYTH: a DCE degree which had a value, now sold to local polytechnic institutes under DTU!!!!
FACT: DTU is a non-affiliating University. It cannot give affiliation to outside institutes. THERE IS NO AFFILIATION PLANNED NOR APPROVED.

Okay no affiliation is planned but would it not take a simple amendment in the DTU act 2 years from now to grant such a status. HOw can the owners of this blogspot operation claim that something like this will not happen five years from now when DTU kids are actually on the chopping block. and lets talk about distance learning and online education.. what about that one?? with all the EDUSAT infrastructure in place isnt that going to happen. so instead of giving BE exams people withmoney can pay sit at home and get DTU degrees (which actually will be DTU (formerly DCE degree) how can alumni sit idle and not voice their concerns about this??

MYTH: CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION, CORRUPTION ...
FACT: Not a single financial irregularity has been reported/found in the last 20 years!! It's a government institute where independent audit is done every year! Just writing in CAPITAL does not make any case.

See my assertion about moral corruption and how this harms kids who will graduate in 2013. and the moral corruption on the part of owners of the savedceisamyth blogspot operation. The fact that that website isnt even linked to the main DTU website reeks of shady nature of the entire operation and the veracity of their claims.

MYTH: BRAND DCE gone!!!! DTU blacklisted from all PSUs and many top notch companies!!!!!
FACT: Every single official document of DTU clearly mentions (formerly Delhi College of Engineering). This was added inspite of pressure to not have it there. It is there precisely to preserve the brand name. There is no official proof for blacklisting! It is all a hearsay spread by the Student leaders....Soon letters of support from companies will be published by PSU's!

PSUs hmm so mr PBs decides that hence forth all kids from DTU will go join a PSU. what about private companies and higher education abroad. I know a thing or two about how admission committees work (my roommate served in one of them) He categorically states that unless your application and transcripts bear the mark of a known institute your packets arent even opened. and this has been confirmed to me by high ranking university officials. So basically one man has decided the fate of 100s of DTU kids. Go work for PSUs. this is against the tenets of individualism that I strongly believe in

MYTH: The man behind this move is HE WHO MUST NOT BE NAMED who has been granted an extension on his retirement.
FACT: We name him, Prof. P B Sharma, the man who made DCE what it is now through his selfless service of 20 years. Right from introducing a world class entrance exam (CEE) to moving the campus from Kashmere Gate to Present, promoting professional student chapters, funding research and innovation...this man has devoted his life to make DCE a world class institute.

Is DCE really a world class institute?? lets examine this claim in detail. what is a world class institution?? Let pick up the example of harvard university. Everyone would agree that harvard is a world class university. EVEN our shri PBS says so. lets look at their website. www.harvard.edu and lets compare it to www.dce.edu. front page of DTU website(note the domain name) has shri PBSs photo on it. harvard website has some news let about academic achievements and associated graphic and is updated everyday. DTU website also has some pics about an optical spectrum analyzer, some old ass optical setup and a solitary junk piece of a microscope. not exactly a world class institute.. but that cosmetic difference aside, lets delve deeper. harvard gives a start up fund of $200k to $1.2 Millions an an average to every new faculty to set up an experimental laboratory. Doe DCE have such funds? or will they offer it to incoming faculty members? hiring of PhD students world class institutes like harvard hire PhD students through their masters program or direct track PhD students. In India the system is that you get hired on the basis of your gate scores. Which is all fine and dandy but the process is archaic and involves students being interviewed by a board and then assigned or hired by a department. what happens to them after they enter a deptt is unknown.. do they have a choice of advisors?? that system is not transparent.. that was the case with DCE.. will it imrove with DTU?? number of experimentalists, fabrication work, collaborative PhD students I can draw a pretty elaborate list. Just because students of a institute are endorsed by a PSU or make fancy toys dont make an institute a world class one. DCE has languished at no 9 for so many years and DTU will langiush there for the next few years till real DTU kids come out and we will know the reality then

MYTH: 21!!!! TWENTY ONE cases of frauds against the man – who will not make his publications PUBLIC
FACT: Not cases, allegations. All of them were proven false....you people love RTI's right? Go and file an RTI seeking the result of inquiry committee for RGTU (M.P). NOTHING WAS PROVEN AND HE WAS ACQUITTED OF ALL CHARGES.

MYTH: P B Sharma is political and support Education Mafia.
FACT: P B Sharma got into controversy in Bhopal only for this: OPPOSING AND NOT BUDGING TO EDUCATION MAFIA! We are here for facts, and the fact is that because of his efforts M.P institutes saw policies implemented which prevented private colleges from taking money for admission, a Common Admission System was implemented by Prof Sharma which led to the entire controversy. THE VICTORY IS: THE SYSTEM IS STILL IN PLACE AND FINALLY LAW CAUGHT UP WITH THE MAFIA AND THEY HAVE BEEN DISMANTLED AND NEUTRALIZED.

6.) So why do this???

The reason why I started writing in the first place against DTU so openly was follows. When I first made some comments in the facebook against DTU, I was sent abusive chat by some of the community members in that group. They identified themselves as the members of save DTU community. When this whole faracass started, there were others like me too but obviously, they too were abused and chose not to pursue this further. With me, It became so bad that I had to quit facebook for a few months. And then I realized WTF. I just voiced my opinion and this is a regard they have for accomplished alumni I wonder how they might be threatening students on campus. I cam back online and I have written vociferously about the cause since..

lets examine the credibility of those who run this blogspot. They obviously are either current students or some alumini. And a greater section of these students are those who will get DCE degree so they cannot care less(it is to be noted that first bacth of DTU students was admitted only last year and they wont be in the job market till 2013) So it is comprised of mostly current DCE student who have the degrees that they need, and only care about references from PBS which tides them in the job market. If courts can question the locus standi of the petitioners, I question the standing of the blogspot operaters?? how can they claim to be the torchbearers of truth when they themselves have no standing or stake in this matter. they themselves are C-graded selfish SOB of human beings..

These are the final words I have to say to the matter. I will post this link to the comments section of the myth blog as well as on facebook. with that I am done.. I stand by what I said, I will denounce DTU with all my might but the thing is my might isnt even needed.. nobody knows what DTU is. Writing formerly DCE wont help. outside india people wont care less and Inside india well time will tell but yes DCE i Know and cherish no longer exists..

i wasnt sure if i was going to write something in reply or not but here goes. true i was supported by the the now VC prof. PBS and I also know who the batchmate is who messaged you guys.

here is the thing though. I was one of the few guys and probably the only non topper who made it to the best optics program in the US on free ride (not just any foreign university as so stated). So yes if you all are propagators of facts then know this, not many people liked me for what I achieved and they always thought I never deserved it. To such bigots I have nothing to say
I know the decision on this agitation has been taken. I have had the opportunity to work with one of the greatest expert in my
area and I will have a standing in the global academic circles in the future. rest assured i will continue to denounce DTU and what it stands for with all the power and influence i have and ever will have. It will have nothing to do with my familys association with Sh. N.k. bhagat. i will do it for i denounce one mans greed and corruption in the strongest terms and the fruit that comes from it will be punished by me all I can. In today’s world of cut throat competition every body is running after three things namely; power, wealth and carnal pleasures. These three indulgences have been conveniently named as practical things. Thus a monster who blindly indulges in acquiring them is termed as a practical person; a person who is very important in this world and in fact, people tend to believe, that it is these practical people who are shouldering the burden of entire humanity. It is thus advised to idolize practicality and people like the author believe it should be accepted as a universal religion.
It is true that man needs money and some sort of influence in society so that he can lead a comfortable life. But he should draw a line at point where comfort remains comfort and does not become greed. We have all heard the story ‘How much land does a man need’. In that story the protagonist as a part of a wager was to cover the entire length of land that he wanted to acquire in a day on foot. The amount of land, he needed to spend comfortably the rest of his life, he had covered within the first few hours. But later the monster of practicality made his mind nebulous and he continued running till he died. His dead body ironically needed only six feet of land for burial.
If all powers and talents were to indulge in crass practicality then who will perform the important works like building up of society, development of art, educating the masses etc.
Take for example the teaching profession. Teachers have been traditionally entrusted with the job of educating our young minds, the pillars on which the future of modern society lies. If they start charging exorbitant fees for their services, i.e they become practical then our young impressionable minds will not get molded properly and our social fabric will suffer irreparable damage. Already one can see the effects of practicality swallowing up this noble profession, with opening of coaching centers and prep schools for preparations of various examinations.
Appreciation of art is one virtue that separates humans from animals. Since performing arts and theatre gives little money in a culturally rich and fast becoming practical country like India, many artists have given up art to look for some more practical professions.
In my opinion, running after wealth and power is not an inborn virtue in humans. When we are born we are devoid of any avarice, any malice towards anybody. Slowly and gradually, we are engulfed by the monster of practicality and start leading a life in which we are not happy from the inside; our soul bleeds to death. Therefore these ideas that idolize practicality and call for all powers and talent to endorse and accept it should not be promoted

Suppose your father is dying of cancer and your neighbor’s wife is expecting her first born child on the same day. And by the stroke of chance, the timing of the death of your father and the birth of a newborn in your neighbor’s family coincide. Will you be mourning the death of your old aged father who had nothing more to contribute to the society or will you hail the birth of your neighbor’s child, the future of the society? The obvious answer is that you will mourn your father’s death. This is because there is something in each and everyone of us that is close to our hearts, that is private to us, that which we cannot share with anybody. 'That' is what defines us and we in turn define the society. This 'that' varies from individual to individual and the fact is the defining something or a set of things that satisfies the need of society as a whole is a task that in the true sense fits the definition of the term impossible. On the other hand if we adopt a procrustean attitude and try to forcefully fit in everybody in a given frame( who defines that frame is another topic of debate) then there is bound to be dissent in certain individuals and this in turn can cause destabilization of society.
If on the other hand if certain individuals try to fulfill all their wanton desires, then poverty and widespread discontent would result and in the resultant paranoia and agitation, social fabric would face severe and irreparable damage.
So what options de we have to make society thrive? The answer lies in adopting an approach of moderation. In establishing small groups of people having the most similar features and needs and then taking care of most of their needs so that no or very little dissent results.
This model has been adopted in post independence India and so far the integrity of this geographically and culturally diverse nation has suffered little damage whereas socialist giants like USSR have collapsed without trace.
In India there is a practice of awarding economic subsidies to poorer and underdeveloped sections of society. The working class is not overburdened by taxes and the businessmen and capitalists have to pay up taxes proportionate to their income. Newer industrial ventures are encouraged and educational institutes are given land and other facilities at subsidized rates on a condition that they reserve certain seats for students from economically weaker section of the society. The success has not been exemplary, but still there has been almost no damage to the integrity of this country.
I am not saying that this model is an ideal one and everybody should follow it. The principle behind it is essentially correct, i.e. to allow everybody to flourish according to their means and ability but only to a point where they do not start interfering with the lives and destinies of others. But imperfections in its implementation in India have made the model look imperfect. There is a huge scope of improvement in the implementation of this principle and other countries can look to adopt this model with changes that suit their ways.
To conclude I would like to say that the principle of moderation towards the needs of both individual and society as defined above is the best way for the society to thrive. Its implementation however has to done carefully with right attitude in mind

Man lusts for two things: power and money. Both power and money are like two sides of a coin. They complement each other perfectly. With money comes power and with power comes money. People like rulers and heads of states of developed nations, businessmen heading cyclopean organizations, leaders of small yet militarily powerful nations and heads of nation having strong allies sit on the throne of power and play games with destinies of the people and nations of world. At times these games are nothing more than reckless pursuits towards selfish ends of these individuals. The conclusion of such games is nothing but devastation on a large scale. Devastation that destroys people, creates deep chasm in the social fabric of a nation and redraws the world map.

It is said that 'with great power comes great responsibilty'. Men in the position of power are most effective when they exercise caution and restraint in the use of power. There are many examples that elucidate that when power has been misused that consequences have been tragic. Take for example the mindless imperialistic pursuits of germany, france, england, italy etc during 18th and 19th century. These imperialist powers indulged in rapid colonization and left a gory trail of blood and destruction behind them. Taking the specific case of systematic colonization of india by east india company. After forcefully taking over most of india, the east india company had to deal with sporadic revolts taking place all over the country.The great revolt of 1857 shook their foundation and the crown had to take control of the indian empire. What followed was a continous struggle for independence both by violent and non violent means. And if the internal conflicts were not enough, the raj had to deal with the growing insecurities between various nations of power about the growing boundries of others. These insecurities led to world war I and subsequently world war II. These two wars particularly the later one saw the use of most potent weapons of destruction ever invented by man. Machine guns, AK 47, submarines, trench warfare, chemical and biological weapons and the most destructive of all atomic bomb were unleashed on both civilian and military establishment. Millions of people died and for what purpose? because some people on the throne or power had a voracious appetite for something that was not theirs.

Now looking at the present day scenario, after the fall of USSR and end of cold war era, governments, jaded by the mass destrution caused by these two world wars are more careful before engaging in military option. A pakistan indulging in misadventures like kargil faces severe economic sanction from even its closet ally (USA).An afghanistan sheltering a terrorist organization like al-qaeda faces military action. But later on the people in position of power(USA AND UK) take the initiative to rebuild the war ravaged country. Clearly the focus of the people in power has now shifted towards exercising restraint and caution before using power. This is the obvious need of the hour. The hydra headed monster of terrorism(our past haunting us) refuses to subside and it is in the best interest of everybody that we direct our resources and powers in quashing the monstrous reptile before it consumes the entire humanity.

happy 2009 and an ode to the readers of this blog

well this is my first post in this new year. This year it will be two years since i first started blogging. I dont know how many people read my blog, but those who do happy new year to all of you out there. People who i probably will never meet but who are connected to me through this blog. I find such connections fascinating to say the least. I would like to imagine an average 25 year old person way back in 1950. How many people he/she would be connected to? your family, people at your place of worship, your neighbours, your workplace, your school (if you go to one), college was a dream prospect back then for a family with average means. Cut to 2009 and you meet people from all walks of life. I for one, who is an average 24 year old guy, have met people, who i am still in touch with, at school, college, tuitions during middle school, tuitions during high school, coaching classes for entrance examination to college, college, college parties, other college parties, dads business associates, distant cousins in foreign lands, online networking forums with dedicated theme, online general purpose social networking forums, graduate school, people who read my blog and so forth.

These different people that i have met during the course of my life, have left a distinctive impression on me. And most fascinating thing about meeting so many people is something like a classmate of mine went to college with a present associate of mine, or bumping into somebody you met years ago seven seas apart years ago, or calling up somebody you havent met for better part of a decade and then getting to meet them or when your childhood buddy whom you havent met for more than 15 years decides to get married and calls you/or email you and so forth. Its like if you are a pin in this vast sea of pins and the world is like a cardboard on which all these pins are placed and when you connect these pins with a thread; a thread representing a connection and each connection representing a color, you will get such vibrant patterns. These patterns define and individuals life. The people you meet, the people you connect to leaves a distinctive influence on who you are. You are a sum total of colors of all these connections. The more the connections, the more the colors and more complete you are.

I am very happy to have one more color to my being. My connection to those who read this blog. I am not sure if i will meet any one of you at any point in my life. We may or may not bump into each other as complete strangers, sit right next to each other in a movie theater, be related to one another without knowing that this is the person whose this article i liked and so forth, but we have a connection. A connection which at a very basic level connects our thoughts. To be very honest i write for my self. I am not a professional blogger who clocks cpl of dozen articles every month, or the sorts who makes money out of it by promoting commerical products on his/her blog (I may become that at some point in distant future but not now), nor my pieces are always pleasing to the eye. I write what i feel should be written. What i feel to be important either to myself or to people who at some level think like me. On an average i would write an article every month or two or even less but i write for i love writing and i thank those who read what i write and give comments whether constructive or criticizing.

correlation between bidirectional stockholm syndrome and arranged marriages : risk management in indian wedlocks

Stockholm syndrome is a psychological response sometimes seen in an abducted hostage, in which the hostage shows signs of loyalty to the hostage-taker, regardless of the danger (or at least risk) in which they have been placed. The syndrome is named after the Norrmalmstorg robbery of Kreditbanken at Norrmalmstorg, Stockholm, Sweden, in which the bank robbers held bank employees hostage from August 23 to August 28 in 1973. In this case, the victims became emotionally attached to their victimizers, and even defended their captors after they were freed from their six-day ordeal. The term Stockholm Syndrome was coined by the criminologist and psychiatrist Nils Bejerot, who assisted the police during the robbery, and referred to the syndrome in a news broadcast ( from wikipedia) . My view of arranged marriages in a positive sense is that most of them are one form or other of this stockhom syndrome. However it is not a plain stoclkholm syndrome. It is more like a modfified bidrectional configuration. let me be a little more clear about it.

In arranged marriage, two hitherto unknown strangers, get hooked up. They are hooked up either by their parents, their social circle, shaadi.com, NRI matrimony servies, newspaper ads etc etc. The mode may be anything, but the end result is the same. Two virtual strangers are bounded by lifelong bond of holy matrimony. This bond is governed by a two way stockholm and after the kids are born, they are part of that equation. The husband and wife are both captives and captors in this bond. Another way to at this is that this bond holds husband and wife captive together. They both dont know the true self of the respective partner. In most cases, they dont know each other and they havent met before as well. Thrown together under one roof, they start looking, cooking and cleaning after each other. That when carried on for a period of more than year creates a stockholm like situation. The husband gets to know the wifes wierd notions, the wife gets to know the husbands habits. They both start making mutual adjustments .Dislikes become likes and likes become dislikes. When a child is born of such a wedlock, it further cements such a relation. Both captor and captive now have a common subject which they both like. That common liking further unites them. Their happiness lies in the happiness of that kid. With time, this bidirectionl stockholm mutates into something more concrete, a four lettered word called love and everybody lives happily ever after....

Hold on.. I aint a rajshri banner fan. Theres got to be catch in this tory somewhere. So heres the catch. Even in these so called perfect wedlocks, nothing can turn out to be perfect. The guy may turn out to be a dowry seeking, drunk moron who has this notion that beating his/her spouse whih he got after no effort of his, is the ideal way of exerting his manhood. Such idiots are well left early to minimize any long term physical and emotional trauma. On the other hand, the girl might turn out to be a picture perfect caricature from desperate housewives TV shows who goes around flirting with all the friends of his hubby while he is out earning bread and butter. A well qualified professional wife is an easy solution to this problem.

Coming to risk management in indian/desi wedlocks, I am not any expert in the mixed desi couples. but as far as purely indian couples( both hubby and wife of indian origin), the idea here is to compare the element of risk in romantic relations as opposed to arranged relations and what sort of risk lies in either. 'love' based relationships are almost always based on some sort of farce or the other. As opposed to a solid scientifically proven phenomenon (stockholm syndrome), love marriages are based on abstract concept called 'love' Its an invisible candy very aptly marketed by various film makers so that their multi million dollar movies based on Mr Right finding the Mrs right and vice versa, them falling in love and living happily ever after sell like hot cakes. Various conceptions propogated in these movies include nonsense such as true love transcends life time, true love is infalible, ideal couples dont fight and so forth. Many people take this nonsense to their heart, especially at an early age, when lines between practicality and idealism are as blurred as houses when you look out of the window of a fast moving train. With such notions in their head at this stage, some people begin the quest of true love. In this quest, i am not aware of intentions of the fairer sex but being a guy i know what men want ( I am talking about straight relations here. this is because i am not aware of homosexual relationships). That want, that desire guides them for most part. This is true for all men atleast in their early years. As they grow up, some of them grow up but for most part, many dont and they still want the same them. Their defination of love can be summed up by phrases such 'kiss kiss bang bang' , 'cover the face and f*** the base' , 'game', 'scorecard' , 'list' and so forth. Such men do end up suceeding at what they want to do but for large part they succeed in conveying the shallowness of the term true love. I have known many a women who do the same which much more panache than their male counter parts but their reasoning and motives are unknown to me. When these relations actually manage to reach the point of marriage, then comes the influence of practical issues. All this while either counter part can be putting up apearences, simply because eihter/both of them have invested heavily in a relationship and none of them are willing to let go of the other even if it means lying to other till they are married. Lie being discovered before marriage leaves both parties emotionally scarred. Lie being discovered after marriage bacomes a statistic in raising number of divorce cases.

In the case of arranged marriages, this bidirectional stolkholm like situation actually assuages the situation and statistically it has been shown in various studies that arranged marriages are more successful then love marriages; the only yardstick of success being divorce rates. In my opinion it is this stolkholm like situation which minimizes the risk of such marriages failing. In these relations, you do not fall in love but if everything goes well, you grown in love and this growth actually strongly roots such relationships in firm grounds thus minimizing the chance of their failing unless some specific circumstances occur.

of completed projects, colliding realities and truth that is stranger than fiction

completed projects:
I am done with another semester at graduate school. It looks like a race half left rather than race half completed. It is not because i am pessimist but from the looks of it, i have more work to do from now than i have done until now in the same time period. Of all the projects that i intended to complete, I have come good on most of them. I now have a full flavor of grad school and truth be told i like it here professionally. My life here from office to ghar and ghar to office is peaceful with no obstructions. I do what i need to do and things happen accordingly. Personally however, there are somethings i dislike and some i really really dislike. But then again, the whole deal with the devil when i signed on this venture was that "against my personal life ( and lack/dislike of thereof) and a menial stipend, i agree to donate the next five years of my life to grad school." back then doing my own thing was so important to me that everything else looked meaningless. Now my own thing is about as important but other things are slowly becoming more and more important.

colliding realities:
I know its not very original but my way of seeing life is numbers and equations, Balance. I am a big fan of balance. I believe when new variables get introduced in the equation of life, they need to be balanced with newer variables still. Being an uncomplicated person, I am not a very big fan of adding new variables. Of late I have however learn that balance itself is not very intuitive. Life equation is not like equations i work with or atleast as simple. The thing with new variables is that they best be left alone. attempts to balance realities of life, however meager they may be are futile. all they end up doing is changing the equation itself.

truth indeed is stranger than fiction. I always thought of this dialog as a rambling of a half ass old dude who has nothing to do but come up with random quotes of the day (no offense). Turns out this right here is one of the the most important take home message of life itself. Take home message in sense that assuming you get a second chance at life, this statement probably should be your guiding light. Truth is strange, very strange. Fiction you can predict. but truth is an unpredictable and unmeasurable reality that governs your everyday existence.

Emotional Atyachaar: my predictions on DEV D

Its been a while since i have visited my blog pages with an intention to write something. I have been hard pressed for time and am short changed even now. but there is something that is growing on me so rapidly that perhaps writing about it is the only way i can get it out of my system and concentrate on tasks at hand. It something like taking a dump so that you can move on with the rest of your day. But rest assured what i am writing here is hardly distasteful. It is just that i have other things to I want to write about but this possibly is the only thing i can write about in 20 minutes and then get on with my life.

Anurag kashyap is a maverick genius. He is all that i like about indian cinema. Full of new ideas viz a viz sript writing, has great cinematic sense, is a visionary director, works with new faces and untested talent and brings out the best in them.

He made his start along with irfaan khan in a star plus serial called Darr. 'Darr' was a psychopathic thriller where irfaan khan played a serial killer by the name of 'desi jallad' who used to vent out his hatred for his wife on whores by brutally killing them. If my memory serves me, that was in the later half of 1990s that this serial was telecast on star. It was clearly ahead of its time and soon got relegated to 10 clock slot when all the traditional indian families had had their stomachs full and have other things to do than watch a killer kill whores and act on his sexual perversions. It soon faded away as star got its 'KK' ticket to famedon and high TRPs.

But that was a masterpiece no doubt. Pretty soon there after, he came out with 'Paanch' and 'Black Friday'. Paanch was never allowed to be released commercially. It was again a film ahead of its time. With charaters having names like pondi, murgi, luke, shuili and joy in circa 2000 when the urban india at best was a closet case as far as expressing sexuality and wanton desires went, a film like this was perhaps the biggest challenge to the fragile social fabric of that time and hence was never allowed to be seen by the masses. A casual look throug blogoshere tells me that the recently released 'Rock on' is a toned down version of Paanch by about a factor of 1000. The amount of impact paanch would have on indian cinema even if it is made to release now would be tremendous.

I am not saying this on a whim. Another timeless classic called 'Black Friday' by the same director which released recently after the verdict on 1993 bombay bomb blasts came out proves my point. It was a great hit which proved the visinory filmaking skills of anurag kashyap. Then came his 'No smoking' about which i will write another time. Right now i am really eager to talk about his take on 'Devdas' titled DEV D. Slated to be release on 19th december, this movie already looks to be a masterpiece in the making.

For the uninitiated, devdas is a character based on the Sharat Chandra Chattopadhyay novella Devdas.

Devdas is an idealist, someone like howard roark. Somone who is good in concept but difficult to realize. He loves paro, his childhood sweetheart but the circumstances prevent him from marrying her. He turns alchoholic after losing both the love of his life and his family and permanently gets into a platonic relationship with a whore named chandramukhi and makes her brothel his permanent quarters. He eventually dies alone, devoid of love and away from his family due to alchohol abuse.

Now this is hardly something you make a movie about in my opinion. The guy is basically a loser who for the lack of some 'quality' action falls hook line and sinker for this one chick and basically wastes away his life wanting her and only her. common dude get some life!! anyhow three movies have already been made on this topic and basically they are sugar coated distortions of this concept which would give a 21 year old chronic diabeties.

Enter anurag kashyap and you get Dev D out of Devdas. Dev D looks to a pot smoking pill popping guy whose single point agenda in life is to get some 'action'. Love for him is not singing songs or getting drunk on cheap country liquor. He looks like a guy who would pop a pill and 'F***'. Now i dont have the slightest idea how the whole script is going to unfold but from the looks of it its gonna be a ball. Kashyap has casted a by the book pristine panju beauty for the role of paro who in this movie is not a virgin(in the original devdas paro being a virign throughout the novel was a very big deal. She was 'saving' herself for her devdas. what crap!! i doubt if anyone even talks like this anymore) Chandramukhi is renamed chanda in this movie and she redfines slut. I have always maintained that chameli in my books was a big flop simply because kareena kapooor cannot look like a slut no matter how hard she tries. Kalika playing the role of chanda looks like someone who means business and that would mean pure unadulterated entertainment when this movie comes out

The only face recognizible in this movie is abhay deol which grapevine suggests came up with the concept of this. For once i believe the rumors appear to be true. abhay deol seems to be in his element as a pill pooping hyppocrite whose one point agenda is to get some action with his sweetheart 'paro'. He looks to be at ease in his character and diplays an array of emotions from' tharki', to high to angered to simply bored with panche even in the two minute traler of the movie recent released.

The music of DEV D is by amit trivedi, the guy who gave us the haunting track of Aamir and if 'emotional atyachaar' is anything to go this, he will surpaas his work in Aamir

To close my praise of this movie to be released, I wish to see more of anurag kashyap and less of rajshri productions or the like in this future. People like anurag kashyap hold promise for the future of indian cinema for they bring with them fresh talent, freash ideas, fresh script and fresh music. They are the ones who make bollywood bollywood and not some'RAJ' recycle bin with trains in the closing and opening sequences.

Hell-Heaven

I would like to assume that the person reading this would have read The unaccustomed earth by jhumpa lahiri. Though this fragment of writing has no direct relation to that masterpiece collection of short stories by the much acclaimed writer, nor do these two or so paragraphs have the poise and the strength of prose that is possessed by the author of that novel.
This piece however draws parallels from Hell and Heaven, a story belonging to that collection. Hell and Heaven describes the experience of Indian diaspora in USA. The story spans three generations beginning in 1970s and culminating in the present time. It shows how people who came to America from India in 1970s were much attached to their roots . For them finding an Indian family and that too belonging to their hometown is sometimes a catalyst that enables them stay to on as for them, beyond the realms of intellectual and monetary pursuits, a thread that connects them to their roots gives them a much stronger sense of being at home than going to home itself. In contrast the progeny of such individuals who are born and raised in America are much closer to American culture. They adopt the American way of life, are educated in american ways and embrace the american culture in more ways than their parents have or ever will. They cannot eat the home cooked indian food for it is too spicy, bu they will gorge all day on the chemical mac and cheese and other such foods, smoking joints, booze etc is all so cool and so is 'hanging out' and 'making out'; terms that were unheard of when their parents were students.
But there is something more to it. Something more ominous as pointed out by the author in ever so scuttle manner that is so characteristic of her. The fact that the first generation diaspora that came here back then deserted their parents in their old age even though the indian system of values taught them otherwise, they now face a clear and present danger of being relegated to old age homes in an alien country when their end days come. For their children who are alien to indian value system cannot be expected to take care of their parents. This i believe is life's way of coming full circle. What the first generation indians did to their parents back then will happen to them in their old age. And it is worse for them for their parents at least died in the motherland; they face dying alone in a country not theirs.

After reading that short story, i have come to realize that Hell and heaven as described in the context of that story have blurred out in the present time. The present generation of students who move to US to pursue higher studies are a different breed all together than the previous generations. Quite a sizable percentage of them are from affluent families with private school English medium education and hence a set of values with a more occidental hue. The concept of dating isn't alien to them and so isn't drinking or smoking. Quite a few of them have had close encounters of 'that' kind and some of them are very open about their boyfriends/ girlfriends even with their parents. For such individuals, the culture shock is not as rude as it used be for their previous generations. America on its part has also changed since 1970s. There are a lot many Indian restaurants than there used to be back then and thus food is no more a concern as it was for the protagonist of that story. The non existent social life in college and university campuses back then as described in that work has also translated into something very colorful. Many American universities have hundreds of indian students. Coming from different parts of India, they are neatly organized into into indian student associations across various universities. These organizations give a vibrant and family like atmosphere to thousands of students coming from India. These groups enable fostering of strong bonds among people sharing same homeland in an alien land. Some of these bonds even last a lifetime.
So have heaven and hell merged into one singular state? Is the American experience mostly trouble free now as apposed to what it was back then? The answer is no. While Jhumpa lahiri focussed on issues that were more prominent back then, at this point from where i see, issues are different. For all the education and forward thinking, modern india is more divided on the lines of region now than it was then. This chasm is seen in a new light in indian diaspora in american campuses and beyond. People tend to flock with people of their own region. With a mass exodus of indians to american universities as students, being an indian is not enough. you have to belong to the same university of same city or same state at least if you are going to hang out together. The balancing of indian side and american side by the current lot is also shaky. While on one hand i have met people who say that 'Indians are not the best people to hang out with' to people who would have a strong opinion about democrats and republicans and dirty Indians within one year of being here and on the other hand there are those who still don't touch meat or liquor clinging on to their age old beliefs. So in this scenario what is heaven or what is hell? In the times when occident is learning a trick or two from orient and orient is adopting things that occident is slowly phasing out from its way of life there is no hell or heaven.

rochester to baltimore: a mini travelogue

I have been in US for two years now. And for some unknown reason havent had any proclivity whatsoever to venture on my own outside the confines of the quaint hamlet called Rochester. It wasnt my inability to do so that limited me but it was my lack of desire to leave the safe confines of Rochester and the fear of facing the unknown beyond it alone shackled me. Couple that with the becalming influence of 6-9 month long frosty winters and rainy season of Rochester and that for me had been a killer dosage to suppress any urges of venturing out.
So this summers when my brother go an internship at John Hopkins, something in me stirred and against all my instincts(or lack of thereof) i offered to drive him down to baltimore. If you look up Rochester and Baltimore on google maps, they are roughly 350 miles apart . The fact that i had never driven alone for more than 20 miles(beyond the confines of rochester) had me both excited and worried. Excited because under the guise of dropping off my brother, this was the perfect chance for me to break those invisible shackles that bound me and live life like it should be lived and worried for obvious reasons.
At the beginning of the journey i was pretty wired for obvious reasons. But the 70 mile stretch on I 390 outside state of new calmed my nerves and soon I began to savor the
pristine landscape of the state of Pennsylvania. What I saw on this journey can perhaps be called the most pristine landscape I have ever seen( the fact that I havent seen much shouldnt take away anything from the beauty of this landscape) . With small gas stations selling cheap gas nested in the lap of the hills to pristine rivers, I saw all in this journey to which I could feel in my bones, a sense of belonging. A feeling that i was close to my roots. The chimps on the trees, the birds on the wire and the men in their steel beasts all seemed together in perfect harmony as if they belong to each other, as if this is how it has been since the beginning of time and this is how it should be till a meteor strikes the earth again wiping out everything only for everything to be rebuilt as it was then. There is not much to describe about the journey as such. I took two stops. On at a subway for lunch and another at a starbucks for coffee. I had my underage brother with me so a trip to wineyards was out question although their charm was irresistible. So all in all driving at 60 miles an hour, i captured as much as i could with my eyes; the beauty, the serenity and the unison of everything.
Someday when i become a better photographer, i will start cataloging memories in digital format. But as far as my first road trip goes, the memories will remain fresh for a very long time.

The Swadesh Syndrome

We are a tribe, we graduate students in US. We are entirely different from our sister tribe in Europe, our cousins in Australia, Singapore and New Zealand and other smaller fragments scattered all across the globe. Without going into a detailed analysis of why we are different, I am going to go straight to the one focal difference. We are all here to elevate the pedestal we stand on or to occupy a higher pedestal as human beings. USA is a land of opportunities, both academic and entrepreneurial. Since we Indians are entrepreneurs by nature, more entrepreneurs (and slightly lesser academicians) throng this country every year to make more money, to build their own house, their own personal space.

Let’s face it, there are a multitude of reasons for each of us to be here be it to earn money, to rise above the billion strong crowds, to carve a niche, to buy an AUDI, to become an American citizen, to marry a gori and so forth. You can rationalize your reason for being here with whatever reasoning you wish or all of the above or some other personal reason you have conjured up to suit yourself. the reality however is that before coming here we are all allured by the promise this place holds for us. But at the core of it all we crave for our roots. According to a recent news input, India was the top receiver of migrant remittance with remittance from US being the single largest component of that. That is a good enough proof of existence of the Swadesh Syndrome. It was first aptly portrayed by Shah Rukh khan in the movie Swadesh. Gainfully employed at NASA and accepted as a US citizen, he played this dude who chose to go back to India to assuage himself of some nagging pangs he felt and ended up staying there forever.

This is the worst manifestation of this syndrome. And since this is a movie and far removed from reality, we will discuss some more real manifestations of this syndrome.

When some of us come here, we are barely out of our teens, having some weird notions of academic grandeur or of the colorful life here. Some of the latest rajshree production movies will have you believe that white chicks big time dig brown skin dudes. Other allures include strip clubs, all night bars, dollars, fast cars and other delusions of utopia. So two year paid slogging or five year on peanut salary slogging looks a small sacrifice in the large scheme of things. When we get here however we acquire a sense of reality. White chicks don’t exactly overtly dig brown dudes and since actuality you are a little below on the food chain, you have to work more hard on that front. Rest whatever money can buy you will end up buying if you can get your H1B which is getting exceeding difficult as the years pass by. Your friends on the other hand who stayed back in India are living the dreams you had envisioned. They might just have the hyundai santro or pink zen estillo but with a stable job they are right up on the food chain to score a chick for both long term/short term purposes. This is when you get the first manifestation of Swadesh Syndrome. You suddenly start noticing Indian girls on campus and they suddenly start looking more ‘attractive’. You start slipping one or two hours beyond the allotted 20 so that you can spend those extra $$$ trying to woo that new found ‘love’ of yours. The fact that she has some cool software consultant lined up for her right after her graduation becomes painfully clear to you at a very late stage and then you look ‘homeward’.

The second manifestation of this is seen in those who quit India as they did not want to do any software job and after doing their masters/PhD they want to do ‘real’ technical job with cool job profile and even cooler paycheck. Quantum mechanically there may be a parallel universe where everything is perfect and all pieces fit nicely in the puzzle of life. But this isn’t that universe. There isn’t a cure for this manifestation. The huge education loan you took means that you will have to do some job. Drinking bear on Sundays with friends on same boat and eventually getting married are the most recommended frustration assuaging practices.

The third manifestation is of the other kind. It is seen in people with very strong ties to their home who want to go do their higher studies in the US so that they can go back home and cure the system of all the ills that plague it. Decent folks these, ironically they are the ones who end of finding the love of their lives here and rationalize their staying back here by saying that home is where heart is. They do go back but that’s mostly post retirement/ after getting their children married

These are all the manifestations I am aware of based on a broad spectrum of people I have come across. I will be lying if I don’t admit to having any of the above described manifestations. After all we all do. There is no shame in it. We are humans and are eternally in the quest of greener pastures but the 'browner' ones cannot be forgotten altogether.

delhi college of disarray

Its been a while since i wrote something here, but this particular item on hindustan times newspaper was too good an opportunity to pass up on. The cat is finally out of the bag!! Six years after i joined that place, i can now say to a common man that dce sucks and not have those kind of looks from him which are usually given by a normal man to a mad man. The article was well and truly short and does not fully justify the state of affairs at dce. Let me just add on to the content and mention things hindustan times forgot to mention..

1. The syllybus hasnt been revised for 16 years and not ten as claimed by the newspaper. 10 was in my days. Its 16 now. Last syllabus revision came in the 1992. this of course excludes those deptts that were set up after this year

2. Results aside, the convocation is held two years after a particular year graduates. My 2006 batch had its convocation in 2008 and on the banners and degrees it was shamelessly splashed convocation 2007 held in 2008. In what convoluted universe does this make any sense?? Honourable chief minister of delhi was present on the occasion which makes the matters worse

3. water tank: The one water which does work is bee infested. There used to be a hornet nest behind it and till i graduated no effort was ever made to clear it up. There used to be a talk of putting up a RO(reverse Osmosis) tower inside dce at my time. IT is very required as water at dce is high in flourine content and drinking it for four years is inviting a dangerous condition called fluorosis. It never materialized.

4. computer center is defunct and grossly inadequate.

5. the 20 faculty members that professor bhattacharya is talking about have been coming since my first year. trust me, they havent come and they arent gonna come

6.Somebody should have fed the reporter the food at the mess. That warranted a sperate article altogether

7. However all said and done, i dont agree with the students if they say they havent been introduced autocad or any other advanced software. Since it is not syllabus which they can procure the copy of before they join, it is then left to them to this stuff on their own

8. DCE was barely able to handle 500 students in our time. You keep on swelling the number of seats and the situation is going to worsen.

All said and done, the rot runs deeper than the article says. So take stalk before you decide on dce as your career option. The thing with DCE is that it is no better than a private college.following are why DCE is still preferred by many:

1 The fact that there are almost no classes held in dce means ample opportunity for people to prepare for MBA/MS/PhD/IAS. People do a lot of internships outside college to learn what is not taught inside college. People join MBA coaching classes as early as second/ third year and spend all their time preparing for IIM which is good which in turn means that a lot of people at DCE end up getting into IIMs eventually. Also there exist some opportunity within campus to do some research projects and if not within campus, permanent faculty is generous enough to help you get an internship outside campus. That helps with your MS/ PhD aspirations

2 DCE still has some brand name because of it alma mater . At all functions/special occations all the principals past present and future have had and will mention shri vinod dham, i would like to ask them what happens to the other 23,999 (B.E. program only) people approximately that have graduated out of dce till date?? they dont care and they dont know for most part. Till recently administration was in zero contact with the alma mater of the college. Of late some attempt has been made to tap them which has resulted in improvement in the placement scenarios. If these attempts continue to be made atleast people wont be jobless post a degree from DCE.

3. Some things in life circumstances teach you. Something positive you can learn from dce is how to make maximum out of minimum at your disposal. four years in dce teach you that. That and team spirit friendship and other notions that are totallly unrelated to the college and its curriculum.

That about sums up what you can learn from DCE. I remember doing my Bipolar MOS lab on a c computer software as BiMOS ICs were very expensive we were told and students burn them. Research yielded that for most experiments we did it costs rs 175-800 per IC and they are pretty robust and unless you want to burn them, they dont. dreams and fantasies- an ode to life

everybody dreams. Dreaming is the first thing you learn after you are born. your first three years when you have no school to worry about, no worry about where your next meal will come from, why E=mc2 and so forth, you learn to dream. However, the worst part is that you forget your dreams, those dreams that you had in the very first few years of existence, as you grow up.
From three to seven you become aware of the world around you. More subtle nuances of your existence dawn upon you. Your parents, your birthday, your gender, existence of another gender,school, importance of learning and working and so forth. These are more general things one gets exposed to in these four years. Depending on your parents circumstances, you may end up being exposed to a smaller subset of it in a more rigorous detail or all of it or you learn a very pleasant thing called 'choosing' at a very young age but more or less this is what happens. In these formative years your dreams are a reflection of your parents. you want to be good like your dad or pretty like your mom but you end up losing those precious dreams which you had in your first three years;dreams that were your own.
From seven to fourteen, you develop a lot of things. Thinking, personality, attitude, awareness of your sexuality,fancy for girls, fancy for things that throw smoke in air and accumulate soot in your lungs among various other things. Your brain is very receptive in these years. Your dreams become more alive and vivid and end up being fantasies. You fantasize about the wonderland alice lives in and if you may end up living in there at some point, you believe in unicorns, in toads that become princesses and so forth. Your parents are very happy with you and in fact encourage you to get allured to these fantasies. They tell stories each one more wilder and fantastic than the last one so that you have your 'sweet dreams'
Between fourteen to nineteen your parents crush virtually every fantasy you have ever had which ironically they fed you gracious portions of when you were a child. There is no alice, no wonderland, no He man, no Superman, no Batman hell even WWF is not real. If you dont study and become something in life you will not be able to survive, you will not have a morsel in your stomach they say. Suddenly food and shelter are not taken for granted any more. Your air castles shattered, your dream turned to dust you suddenly become painfully aware of the fact that life isnt a house of chocolate eternally pleasing to all five senses, it is in fact a grain grinder and you are the grain. Of course not all is gloomy in these years. You learn about friends and friendships. That is perhaps the best thing that can ever happen to you. You get attracted towards opposite sex, your body changes and so does your mind. Reality closes its circle around you and rather than it being a part you you become a part of it.
From 20 to present, where i am right now, you study to become a professional and learn to earn your livelihood. Some succeed at it and by some arbitrary yardstick are termed as successful and others are branded losers. And with the way things are these commendations stay with you for the rest of your lives. But wait, in all this what happened to your dreams?? to what you desired to be??
At this crossroad of my life, i am cursed with having a total recollection of all the dreams and aspirations i had beyond the age of four. If you have read this essay till this point, i urge you to take moment and reflect at your inner self. I am sure all those dreams will come back to you. But why would you want to have this realization that what you are doing now is something which at no point in your life you ever wanted to do?? Even if you get that realization would you give up all you have worked for till now and chase your dreams, those wild fantasies you had as a kid or as an adolescent??
I don't know about you but as far as i am concerned all i can hope to do as a human being is to bring what i am doing now to its logical conclusion. If it takes this lifetime fine maybe in the next lifetime, if my dreams don't die with me I will live them; one lifetime after another.

chemical chai in lalu raj

So this year we had a hog wash of a railway budget from the stables of our very own lalu prasad yadav ji. Railways is 25000 crore richer, more garibraths, fare 'cuts' in off peak seasons in shatabdi and rajdhani blah blah blah i dont even want to know.
What catches my attention is that people in his very own state(in aurangabad district) admitting that they make tea or chai as this extremely popular hot indian beverage is known as from fevicryl. for the uninitiated, fevicryl is no milk. Its a harmful paint based chemical having pearly white color so it resembles milk.
The perpetrators of this egregious crime plead helplessness and say that making milk based tea costs them Rs 150 per unit which they sell at 200Rs per unit. But the overages in terms of bribes mean that their costs double and combine it with relatively short lifespan of milk based tea means that they cannot earn their livelihood from these means. A fevicryl based tea on the other hand costs rs 50 a unit, lasts upto six days while still staying drinkable upon reheating and brings them the same profit with the bribes.
This may have been reported only in aurangabad but who knows where else its happening. Millions of people travel everyday on these trains. They drink tea, eat snacks during their long arduous journeys. while the very cost of their journey has now been reduced, i guess people should be mindful of the fact that it comes at a price and that the next cup of chai that you have may not be refreshing but be killing instead

the movie might sound Hollywoodish but this self stylized whodunnit is from the stables of our very own bollywood. Friday nights for the last cpl of weeks have been potlucks and after potlucks i dont sleep too well. Trying to cut down on my food intake has meant that i am always guilt ridden for not have eaten wayyy beyond my stomach full like i used to.
But this isnt about me. This is about the movie which i watched while drinking about a gallon of orange juice(100% natural one wayy better than pepsi cola) and well it did worsen my insomnia now that i cant sleep without writing about it and quite a few other things i suddenly have on my mind, I am glad that i did watch it.
Strangers starring jimmy shergill,kay kay menon, the doe eyed bengali beauty, daughter of a Nobel laureate who doesnt know how to act nandana deb sen, sonali kulkarni and an acting talent from yester years kitu gidwani in a blink and you miss it role.
Now the thing about a movie like strangers is that it doesnt go well with the sensibilities of indian masses. While adultery is still in closet and walking out of dead relationships still not an option, a movie that shows otherwise is not going to attract too many cinema goers. But if you are looking for a glimpse of powerhouse indian cinema, a good script with oodles of twists and turns and stellar performances, this movie is one of your best bet in the last six months.
The problem with murder mysteries is that you cannot write too much and yet reveal only too little. So without going into too much details, jimmy shergill who has always been a darkhorse in bollywood has come out again with a stellar performance, kay kay menon is as always on the top of his game, nandana deb sen though an extremely pretty sight should stay out of movies and well sonali i miss u :).
I today gained two sentiments from this movie, that writing is like shitting; when you write you vent up all that is accumulated inside of you and that when you hold your breath and think that by doing so everything will come to a standstill, you always end up not holding your breath long enough

Here are the five things that definitely say another is either not interested in carrying on with the relationship (if you aren’t imagining the relationship in the first place) or are not interested:

1. S/ he does NOT introduce you to friends and keeps you a secret: Unless there is secrecy due to parental disapproval or HR trouble (for office romance cases), most people will introduce their partners to their friend circle. If on the other hand, the other avoids places where you could be, does not tell you where s/he would be (for fear you would land up there), does not take your calls, blocks you on instant-messenger and does not respond to SMS-es (even after five days), they are definitely NOT interested.

4. S/ he hopes you will find someone “better” for yourself: It means they are hoping that you would leave them alone and get on with your life. When you are clearly interested in someone and they are giving you the “find someone better” line, it means they wish you’d rather put your interest and affections elsewhere and not on them. Many times people are not comfortable telling another to buzz-off on their faces and employ this tactic hoping the other would get the message.

5. S/ he wants to be ‘friends’ with you forever…: Wanting to “be friends” is the most classic and perhaps the biggest sign that the other is not interested. ‘Being friends’ here should not be confused with the other person valuing you; instead it means the person definitely does NOT see you as a romantic interest. Wanting to be friends is perhaps their way of telling you that ‘friendship’ is all they want from their association with you and is a polite way of telling you to move on.

kal-yesterday and tomorrow...... a tribute

From the amount of movies i see this blog should be filled with tributes to all kinds of movies. from psych thrillers to horror to comedy(i dont do romance!!). But only once in a while there come movies that are befitting a tribute. Of late there was one 'Taare Zameen Par' and then there was one starring kamal hasan called 'Sadma' and then a few notable ones would be 'Haasil' and 'Seher', both worth their weights in gold.
I believe most of the readers would be familiar with actress chitrangada. This two movie wonder shook bollywood with her performance in 'Hazaroon Khawaishen Aisi' . That is another masterpiece. But today when her third movie has been announced i write a tribute to her second movie which in my opinion is her best work to date and I doubt she will ever be able to surpass it. "Kal-yesterday and tomorrow" is a hallmark in cinematic excellence. It is more than a movie. Its portrayal of life itself. A wise man once remarked to me 'Nobody dies a virgin, life fucks all'. This movie is a life size portrayal of that sentiment
Two years ago when i was about to leave for my graduate studies here, i used to sleep pretty less. Days were spent with family and friends and nights watching TV cause i knew it would be sometime before i could see a real nice hindi movie here. SO on one of those days by chance i stumbled upon this movie at 2 am in the morning and can never forget the next three hours.
Its a haunting tale of four friends played by chitrangada, shiney ahuja , raam kapoor and a very pretty simriti mishra. The four friends have a happy life till life itself happens to them. Writing anymore here would be a dead giveaway of the script.
The tale itself is slow paced with haunting soundtrack a remixed version of which can be found on youtube. So if you are into fast paced racy raunchy masala stuff then dont see this movie. You just wont appreciate it. However if you want to reflect on life itself then go grab a DVD and watch it in the darkness of night. It will give you a perspective on a lot of things atleast thats what it did to me.
The director of this movie is ruchi narain , the assistant director for HKA. She has done a great job but her immaturity can be seen here and there during the movie. But all in all its completely pardonable and a great watch

North Vs South or is it....????????????????

They say birds of a feather flock together. I say the feathers may be different but they belong to the same sky; that all the sky is for them to share. They say north should stay in north and south should stay in south. I say north south east and west are the same. In fact they are an amalgamation. Together they are complete and alone they are just fragments; incomplete carcasses of a mammoth culture.
My insinuations are towards growing crisis being faced by hindi speaking population at their very origin. Branded as lawless, brawling, chaotic and barbaric reminders of the marauders who have plagued our lands since time immemorial, they are being singled out and subjugated to humiliation and alienation in the very country where national language is hindi and whose ex prime minister had the pride to deliver a lecture in hindi on the floors of UN general assembly.
My being from the north has got nothing to do with what I write here today. In fact sitting in US, I should be least bothered about whats happening in India. I have never been beyond madhya pradesh(Once to bombay for three days), before coming to US never met any south indian, never dated any south indian girl(the only one i know is aishwarya rai and boy she is hot!! and ironically now married to a north indian living in bombay) and obviously never watchd a south indian movie. Being a pakka north indian from haryana according to some Lt governer of delhi and a certain political wannabe from bombay, i should have popped off a couple of unsuspecting south indians by now, molested at least 10-12 women before/after getting completely wasted, broken all laws regarding parking, loud speakers building construction, money laundering tax evasion, electricity theft, forgery impersonation and last but the least my personal favourite mowing down people under my car.
To their utmost disappointment if they probe in the life of this pukka diliwalla as i pride in calling myself i have done neither. Pride myself in being a law abiding citizen of india for 21 years and a law abiding non resident alien in united states for two years where ironically laws are stricter with lesser loopholes for both north and south indians to wiggle out of.
The reason i am pouring my heart here today is because fighting over names of states, filling up of personal coffers at the cost of stunted growth and red tape were bad enough we now have these irresponsible netas hell bent on irreversibly widening the north south divide.
Banglore is IT capital of india not of andhra pradesh or karnataka where majority of business is carried out in english which is neither hindi nor marathi nor tamil nor telugu. Mumbai is the home of bollywood which churns out the maximum number of movies in hindi language year after year. Haryana produces the maximum amount of wheat in india which is the staple diet from Kashmir to Kanyakumari, the steel from jamshedpur and bhilai is in homes of north and south indians and tea from darjeeling and beauty of himalayas and salt from gujrat and...... the list goes on and on.
Can we live by beating and alienating each other? The above argument amply illustrates that united we stand and divided we fall. So why this chasm? why these fault lines deepening now? The answer lies in petty cultural differences and differences in upbringing people from north and south have. while people from north believe more in showing off what we have and what we dont have,living beyond what means permit and enjoying life to the hilt. From whatever i have observed in graduate students from south india here, i can say that they are generally reserved, brilliant in their minds, not showy and pretentious and very proud of their heritage. These differences are just my opinion and based on my observations. However these petty differences sometimes lead to petty disputes which are now being blown out of proportions and being used for vested interests.
If I look at a micro sample which would my graduate school here, i see a tendency in people belonging to same regions hang out more together. Nothing wrong with that. It is purely a matter of choice more than anything else. But i also find people who have this notion that since people speaking 'their' language are almost equivalent to hindi speaking language, their language should alo be made national language or a certain super star from south should be made bharat ratna and so on. Again nothing wrong with that. Purely their opinion. I dont agree and dont find it to be socially correct to overtly disagree. There are people on the other side too who would use expressions like 'gult', 'southy' , 'illad', 'sambhar -dosa' and stuff like that to brand segregate and label people according to their convenience. Rather than the stupid politicians, there are these small tendencies in us which they aggravate to a point of conflict between individuals born to one land. I for one after coming here have learnt to judge people on merit rather than their mother tongue. Idiots and bigots can belong to both north and south but so do good people. We must learn to see good in human beings regardless of their caste color and creed or else we who weep for our lost sons and daughters abroad will have to weep for ones killed at home by our own hands.

The title being self explanatory, i will get straight to the point. Mohd Haneef innocent or guilty is currently caught in the dirtiest of the three party political games ever played. Australia, India and UK have suddenly become key tormentors of this individual whose every known right as a human being has been violated. He has been pronounced guilty without a fair trial, his status has been declared illegal, his professional career as a doctor is as good as over and well in the medias of these three nations his trial is over one way or the other and verdict already given. He has been made the new poster boy of terror around the globe. Educated, professional and indistinguishable from the crowd; a common man. Thats the new face of terror for you. Do not believe in anyone, anyone can be a terrorist; a doctor, an engineer a lawyer anybody. Thats what being promulgated.
I am not against punishing the guilty, but in the case has the guilt been established? From where I see it, Dr haneef was an honest upright doctor who believed in the goodness of human character and was in turn betrayed by his own cousin. Many of us have had similar experiences, though not so harsh. It is really sickening to be betrayed by someone close to you. But well this is 20th century and like they say, shit happens!!
The situation as it stands right now is that there was a failed attack on a airport in uk, The attackers brother was arrested in Australia for giving his sim card to his brother( no direct connection to plot has been credited to him neither has been the very knowledge of its occurrence) . So instead of being bailed, he is held on some flimsy charges of abetting terrorism, then after being bailed he is rearrested on some other cooked up immigration charges and on top of that his work permit has been canceled and icing on the cake being his landlord has him evicted for non payment of rent. All this so that Australia gets some political leverage with UK. Indian government on the other hand choses not to side with its own citizen and prefers being a mute spectator instead!! And on top of that our very own mumbai police claims that they had forewarned UK that student enrolling in aeronautical, civil and such allied courses six years ago can be a threat to their security. I feel like asking these bozos were they sleeping during kargil or better the last two bombay blasts?? Or they have recently recruited desi Cassandra in their ranks?
Whatever the political compulsions of India UK and Australia an innocent man(till proven otherwise) is currently facing trial by fire and all we can do is pray for him.

Aap Ka Suroor: my take on bhai himesh

this being a democracy and everyone has the right to express his/her opinion. When bhai himesh has the guts to challange the singing style of pancham da i will exercise my right here and well have a pot shot on himesh bhai now that his movie aap ka suroor has gone on the floors. Well those who were into soaps like in mid 1990s(pre sas bahu era) would remember a soap by the name of andaz which in its time ran 175 episodes and was a hit by the standards of that time. Now of course noone can compete with 1000 odd episoded daily soapy syrupy sas bahu intrigue stuff of modern times but in that time, it ws a big hit and i personally liked it too. Bhai himesh gave the title playback of that serial. Then came amar prem another zee tv telecast. Bhai himesh gave music for this too and well that time his main contribution to these two serials wasnt just music but they were produced by him as well. My take is that had bhai himesh stuck with production he might just have given ekta kapoor a sleepless night or two.
Not that i dont like his singing style or anything. I mean he is an okish singer cum producer and has musician genes. But if any of you have heard the sound track of either amar prem or andaz you would know his initial tracks in pyar kiya to darna kya and humraaz are direct rip offs from those and not only that most of his music is unidimensional and his on screen presence shabby. The thing is its just like food. You can have a dish once, twice or thrice but on the forth fifth or sixth occasion you will start looking somewhere else. I frankly have had enough of himesh over the last decade odd and would want him to where he is the best behind the cameras. The reason i am writing this blog today is that today his movie aap ka suroor's trailer was launched. Though the ads were on air for sometime but i thought maybe he is outta his mind, maybe it will all go away or maybe he will shed his trademark beard, cap and worst that constipated look. But i saw this trailer today and well behold himesh bhai is living his fantasy and showing it off on silver screen!! Same old constipated look, cap on hasnt shaved extra couple of days for that extra effect , one side extra hotness in mallika sherawat and on the other a twenty something pure cuteness whom i couldnt get neither can bother.

I am like himesh bhai we know you are imperial music moughul and girls dance to your tunes and everything but please spare the cinema owners the plight of going house empty, the lovey dovy couples who might go in the hall(some guys and gals have wierd notions of dating) and well poor souls like me who do respect you but frankly have had enough of you!!

conference mania!!

the reservation discussion will continue soon!! I am taking a bit of detour to talk about conferences. Well for the uninitiated, conferences are meetings/coglomeration where scientists working on a particular area present their latest work/ findings. I recently joined a research group to do my phd in fiber optics. My advisor also has some interest in quantum stuff so there was this quantum conference in my university and my advisor was to put up a poster. Its a sunday and asks me that he might be late and can i put the poster up on his behalf?? I am a new student willing to create an impression so i say why not?? I willingly reach there one hour early and put the poster up. That was the easy part but my advisor was 15 min late so i had to fend off advances of 3-4 big shots interested in that work that well i dont know jack about it. Then i ran off to find my advisor. lucikly he was coming in so that was that
A general comment about conferences in case you get to visit them!!. A conference audience is generally very focussed. So ou would find grey/white haired big shots+not so big shots. Then there would be young dynamic professors all too excited and well very forthcoming and nice to talk to. Then there would be graduate students. Well these are the best to talk to. They dont know jack, you dont know jack and thats a basis of a very interesting conversation.Once in while(if you are lucky) there are good looking females on the house!! that kinda spices up the show a bit. But they are not very inclined on the non science part of things especially during the conference. So the best way to strike a conversation would be to know the group she is working in or atleast a jack about her poster/ talk. In todays physicsy conference, I an engineer didnt know anything so was at a loss for words.A physicsy friend of mine got into a conversation with this girl and that was that for me!! Now i hate microprocessors more than i did in my undergrad and wish i knew what bell inequalities!!
Final concluding remarks about food. Well food is very essential commodity in any grad students life. Food in conferences is generally of the highest quality and in abundance!! there might be occasions where you get good quality wine. The idea i guess behind conferences is for the new age einstiens to unwind relax and talk science, something they cant do in their day to day laboratory based existence

Not so long ago, 'Hindu,Muslim,Sikh, Isayee aapas mein hain bhai bhai' and since time immemorial 'vasudhaev kutumbakam'. Humanity has been taught to us since our scriptures were first composed. Other religions, castes and creed I am sure follow a similar code.Religion tends to define an individual.Beliefs, eating habits, clothes, deportment, thoughts, actions and community, all are defined by the religion a person follows. Its like an all pervasive shroud a person is born with carries with him for the rest of life and even in death is not parted with it. In a way religion gives a sense of belonging to something, a sense of security, a sense of brotherhood. But the irony here is that already by preaching and practicing different religions, we are sowing the first seeds of seggregation between people.
Skirmishes and clash of interests between people of different religion is now less of a problem. The current world order means that round the globe there are countries where politics are dominated by a particuar religion. The larger problem at hand now is how the to stop in infighting between people belonging to different religious sects. The sword of religion that mrked the melon of humanity never really stopped at just marking. The chasm it created was too deep. Its just that the damage that was subcutaneous is now beginning to show. The fault lines are widening threatening to swallow entire humanity.
The world has its own share of problems along similar lines. Without going into them i will concentrate on things at home. India holds the distinction of housing the the greatest religious diversity. We have hindus dominating, followed by muslims and then sikhs, christians, parasis, buddhists, jains and various other cults and sects following an amalgamation of beliefs.

In not such distant past, our elders used to fret about brain drain, indian talent going abroad leaving behind the motherland the place that nurtured us etc etc. Now circa 2000 onwards we laud the resolve of our expirate brethern for coming back to india, investing here, and giving back to their motherland what they owe.
Since time immemorial, our scripture ascribe motherly attributes to the place we are born in(hindu scriptures). we are taught that the place where we are born is our janamboomi, matribhoomi, karmabhoomi and maransthala (place of birth, place of nourishment, place of work and place of death).
However true this may be in the times of Mahabharata and Ramayana, In the preseant times where we can go around the globe in a day tops, how much of these beliefs are valid?
Looking at the phenomenon of brain drain and reverse brain drain in this light let us see why the former happened and is the latter and different from it
In circa 1960s 1970s and 1980s india was shaping up as a nation. We were rebuilding the tatters left behind by the british raj. We needed a stable economy, dependable infrastructure and a powerful army(courtesy our neighbours). These 30 years were the years nation was being built. A lot of young ones left at this time due to the lack of opportunities(read no infrastructure or economy and constant b0rder skirmishes did not help matters either). They went abroad, lived their american dreams and their descendents got to call america, europe et all their homes.
In 1990s when internet and IT happened, the whole world took notice of the fact that this third world country has a potential; its vast researves of educated manpower.Soon indian economy started to grow at unparalled rates,then came bpo and then post bust things are looking good again. The expirates who were now well settled abroad saw this as a golden opportunity to invest in india and decided to come back. What has ensued and been called reverse brain drain is nothing but a classic example of herd mentality where people are following the footsteps of others. Of course polititcans have been quick to pounce on this opportunity to bring in the dollars with the last government claiming the slogans of India Shining and this one going ga ga over Bhartiya Pravasi Divas
So in totality brain drain and reverse brain drain can be seen as a same phenomenon; the very basic human instinct of following opportunities.

IIT-JEE a cakewalk for Bihar boys

this news item appeared an www.ibnlive.com. although it si a reflection of victory of the underprivilaged against all odds and a story of triumph of a david over golaith, scaling of mt everest et all, there is another issue here which needs to be looked at from different perspective.
IIT-JEE is supposed to be a very tough examination, 2 lakh odd students give it only 2500 odd stand a chance to get a seat of their choice in the institute of their choice. It requires dedicated harwork, focus and perseverence on the part of the candidate taking the exam. So why is that nearly 10 per cent of all iit entrant are from bihar a supposedly backward and rural part of india??how the national capital region fare in this regard?? what about the rest of the nation??
Having myself given iit jee and not suceeding at it, my take is that how very hard we city boys/gals may work, the distractions we have to deal with make it impossible for us to keep up the focus for the duration of two years. we may work hard equally but the lack of hardships mean we end up failing when the litmus test comes. elite schools employ play way methods and claim to focus on holistic development of children. how can you expect a 16 year old to be as fit as micheal jordan, as agile as micheal johnson, an einstein for physicist, an arya bhatta in mathematics and a bigger computer geek than bill gates?? i mean at the end of the day do the holistic curriculums advocated by delhi schools and cbse actually end up making a child any of these?? in the world of cut thoat competition you need master of one trade not jack of all. In my opinion the education system in its present form is clearly missing the point. instead of classes of 50-100 odd students,however prtically difficult it may be, it is imperitive that individuals with individual talents be identified and trained accordingly.
This is how we will have a trained work force suited for particular task. This will even out the distribution of engineers, doctors, scientists, sportsmen etc from all parts of india
